Water Temp Fluctuating

Noticed driving back from work the water temp was fluctuating all over the place...as i'm sure your aware the water temp normally sits nicely at 90 degrees but this morning on the way home I could actually watch the gauge reading less and less, at the moment i'm kind of putting it down to a faulty switch, but only replaced it about a year a go for a green one.

Any Ideas?

mine did this a few times now

it goes to about 1/3 of the way around and goes up and down
THEN it went back to normal checked the water bottle plug and it was abit loose not had problem since pushed the plug in.

The water bottle plug is purly for level sensing...been driving the car all day today and seems fine...would have fitted a capilary gague otherwise just to be sure!
