VCDS (VAG-COM Diagnostic System) is a factory level diagnostic tool. The software with a compatible interface turns you PC into the equivalent dealer tool that a dealer uses to fix your car when you take it in. You can read fault codes, read live values, code modules, perform basic settings and adaptations. You can output tests to exercise portions of your car to diagnose problems. So, that is what VCDS (the new name for the product) is.
What can you do with it? Well that depends on what you want to do. If you are a DIY shadetree mechanic, you can fix your car. If you are an enthusiast, then you can have a play at modifiying some of the standard features of your car to tailor them to your personality. These may include: closing windows by holding the button on the keyfob; unlocking all doors with one press of the unlock button; changing which lamps operate as the DRLs or shutting the DRLs off altogether; and on it goes....
