can anybody tell me the difference between castrol magnatec 5w-30 a1 and magnatec 5w-30 a3/b4. the reason i ask is bought the a1 version from asda a couple of weeks ago for three pound for a litre rather than the a3/b4 type which was seven pound, they are both fully synthetic and i dont really know what the difference is bar the price. i need to top up the oil (again) and im not to sure if i should use it, anybody else tried it??

Check the owners handbook - you should find the information there.

You'll find a VW spec. like 502.00 or 504.00 or 503.00 or ..... On the oil container you'll find the VW spec. if the oil meets the spec. If there are none of these numbers then it doesn't meet any of the VW specs. and you probably shouldn't use it.

Vw recommends castrol edge 5w/30 thinks it's 502.00 or 503.00. Got mine for £60 at dealers for the 1st service. Needed 5 litres of it.

According to the Castrol website none of the Magnatec oils meet and VW specs. The only one that does is Castrol Edge 5W30 which is VW Audi 504 / 507. If you put your reg number into the oil selector tool on Halfrauds website it will confirm it and give you some alternatives too.

Im using 5w 40 quantum, its wats recommended on service list last time i checked.

I used Quantum aswell, bought it from a VW dealer, IIRC I think it was £28.00 for 5 litres.
