Im looking to get a Seat Leon Cupra R 225, looking here, autotrader, ebay etc.

I'm looking for around 50k miles, excellent condition, full seat service history, 2/3 owners, original/unmodified.
What sort of price is a fair price for the above specification, roughly 5k?

Thanks :D

for a LCR in decent condition, had all the necessary work done and that mileage you will be looking at roughly 5-6k
you may fine an odd bargain where someone is in a rush to sell or requires a little work such as cambelt or tyres with that spec and get it a little cheaper but the going rate is roughly 5k ish

Thanks for your reply. What work would be need to be done up to around 60k mileage, apart from work done from servicing and cambelt?

Is it necessary for the water pump to be changed at the same time as the cambelt?

any sensible person would have the waterpump changed at the same time as the cambelt. just make sure cambelts been done 60k or 4 years.

things to check are the floors to see if the carpets wet. door seals are prone to leaking or incorrectly fitted pollen filter letting water inside the cabin. the door seals will eventually go on every leon/golf out there as the seals they used at factory were shite. once replaced with decent parts they shouldn't ever leak again! don't let this put you off its an easy cheap fix and a good bargaining tool to get the price down a little.

check to see if low speed radiator fans work. do this by putting the air con on. if the fans are fairly quiet then the low speed works fine. if it sounds like you about to take off from an airport then the high speed has kicked in. this means the low speed resistor has failed which is another common fault in the VAG range. the car will run hotter than normal even tho most of the time the temp gauge sits in the middle so most people don't pick up on this, where the car runs hotter it has been known for the waterpump to eventually fail due to this.

other than that its just the basic checks to do when buying any car. try and see how the new owner drives it during a test drive. if he/she rags it from cold and switches off the engine after a spirited drive then walk away. the car should be serviced at least every 12k

good luck :)

I originally had the same requirements list as you. No more than 60k, I told myself! I eventually found and viewed a one owner, 40k miles unmodified 225 LCR, which looked great in photos, but it turned out to be a dog; very unloved.

In the end I bought on condition. After viewing several cars I eventually bought my modified, 2 owner 225 LCR at 92k miles. It had been very well looked after!

Admittedly at that mileage I'm still a little concerned about the clutch & gearbox etc, but have no signs of any problems at the moment, and I've read of people with LCRs at 140k with no issues at all, and others at 70k that have had all manner of problems. End of the day, even with a well cared for car, its luck of the draw!

My 2003 LCR is on 186k miles with no issues whatsoever ( touching wood as i type lol), pulls like a train and is a great car, I have personally done around 40k in the car

Yeah I agree, I have two that i'm to see and that are very different.
One is a 3 owner, 50k, full SEAT service history car, the owner has never changed anything besides what is covered in the service.

The other is a 8 owner, 82k mile one but the owner has had it for a year and has changed ALOT of thing. CTA sensor, thermostat, fans, brake pedal switch, link rods, track rods, and a RECON GEARBOX. Are these the things that normally fail around 80k? The 8 owners are putting me off but looks like hes spent alot of money on it in the past year.
