Which shocks.........

Going to replace my front shocks this weekend as the OSF is leaking, which given the fact that i replaced the strut top mounts last month and both the shocks looked ok is a pain in the butt [:@] .

I'm going to be getting the shocks from my local GSF branch (Southampton) but i'm a bit confused as to which ones i should get. My options are to either get Oil or Gas shocks, both of which are the same price (£26.50 + VAT each).

Am i correct in thinking that Oil dampened shocks have a longer service life, more fluid action and on the whole are better.

What would you get

Both types use oil as the damping medium. 'Gas' shocks are pressurised to prevent bubbles forming the oil (which leads to reduced damping).

So gas shocks are better than oil ones, however they are stiffer than oil ones.

Sachs/Boge are the original fitment on VAG cars, and Bilstein are the higher quality replacement ones.

Be a littel careful that the gas ones are stiffer than the oil ones.

On one of my old cars I swapped the oil ones for gas. The front was really nice and stiff, but the back was too hard and crashed over every bump.
