Hi, have just joined the forum to ask a simple question which probably doesn't have a simple answer. My son is looking to buy a 2010 Leon 170 FR CR TDI. Which is better the manual gearbox or the DSG. My own car has
an auto with paddles but it's not DSG, even so I would go with the DSG. Son is not so sure though. What do forum members think?.

Hi, i have also just joined after buying a Seat Leon FR+ 2.0 TDI DSG. I didn't really have the choice between a manual or semi-auto (DSG) but believe me i do not regret buying it in any way.

Very, very smooth to drive and compared to some auto's the dead spot isn't that bad.

All depends if your son would get bored with an auto to be honest, obviously there is the paddle feature if one wants to feel like there playing a PS3 game haha.

I have a FR+ TDI 170 in manual, after owning a 1.4 TSI Bocanegra (which only comes in a DSG form) and I can honestly say I, now, that I will always be looking for the DSG in future! The DSG box is the main thing I miss from my Ibiza. Another DSG transmission will be a requirement in my next upgrade!

DSG. No doubt. Once you go DSG you never go back.

Manual is nice to I back to from time to time (like if you have the luxury of another car), but overall I'd much rather hae DSG in both cars.

Switching is sooo fast and smooth

DSG is the way forward. I can't wait to get my next car which will 110% have DSG!

There are issues from time to time which can be costly, but the later boxes are more resilient.

I have owned a DSG Golf GTI in the past - and after about 3 months, decided that I would NEVER EVER buy a DSG car again! Completely ruins the fun of driving, you need the involvement, being able to switch gears when YOU want, paddle shift is not the same as changing a manual gearbox.

The only thing a DSG is good for, is a traffic jam!

another one for dsg, i honestly think that when it comes to change back i would struggle to go back to a manual, just wish they did the cupra with dsg or even better cupra r.

Had dsg on my Ibiza but have manual on my Leon I have to say as awesome as the dsg is my heart still lies with a manual box, just feel more connected but can't fault the dsg setup at all

The reason Im doing all the leg work is that my son works alot on the North Sea and wont be back on shore till mid-week. Until then communication with him is patchy.
So thanks for all your prompt inputs - really good to see so many views.
Looks like we will probably go DSG unless the test drive at the weekend is very disappointing , which I doubt it will be.

nah, manual
DSG is awesome, most perfect change - but i love driving n i know i'll never change gear as fast, but i like dooooooo prefer manual
got the cupra r last week n DSG isnt available - n if it was i wouldn't have got
BUT if ye want amazing gear changes then DSG is an experience

Cupra R isn't available with DSG, seriously??? Unbelievable!

I now have a 2.0 TFSI DSG, I had been considering a bit of a downgrade after a Mk1 LCR and a 3.2 V6 Audi, but I'm really impressed with the Leon + DSG... and that's without it mapped!
