right, ive searched across the forum but cant find anything specific to this...this has happened three times during the last week but has never happened before then...:(

when i put it into gear, as i lift the clutch and press the throttle i get a whining noise from the engine
as i press the clutch and let go of the throttle the noise stops and starts once i lift my foot off the clutch and press the throttle again....
after about 30 seconds - 1 minute, the noise stops and its back to normal, this has also only happened randomly, it doesnt happen everytime the car is driven.

first 2 times it occurred was when i had stopped the car and left the engine running for about a minute, when i put it into 1st the noise started. the 3rd time it happened was when the car had been off for about an hour or 2...

from looking at other threads and forums with problems similar to this, people have said it could be the throttle body, could be the oil in the gearbox and someone else told me it could be the fanbelt trying to grip...

anyone else had the same or a similar problem?

the cars a 1.4 cls ibiza

Cheers
Arun

Sounds like a bearing on either the clutch or the box to me.

I see your local and theres a good few MK2 owners at the Derby meet in the next week so i'd pop down and ask opinions, as at least one of us has had this kind of problem.

Oh ok, when and where is this meet?

Also if it is the bearing how much do you think it could cost to fix, because my uncle's got a volvo 01 plate and he had a clutch bearing problem that cost 600 to fix!

Mate it sounds like exactly the same problem as i had last couple weeks. My 1.4 has done 80k miles and so thought it must be clutch related. Took it to a transmissions garage and got them to replace the clutch.

When they had it off it was clear the clutch bearing and the bearing sleeve which the clutch runs up and down on had worn very badly and so was creating clutch wobble and bearing whining noises. Had the clutch and sleeve replaced. It fixed the problem and now running perfect. :D

They also sorted the sticky clutch cable and squeeky clutch pedal for free and somehow by chance fixed a dodgy syncro on 1st to 2nd which was a bonus so now its like driving a brand new car!! Although they did say when they had the pedal box exposed they noticed play in the pedal and warned there may be a crack!!! Bloody pedal boxes on these things are S**T!! [:@]

how much was that to fix?
was your making the noise then stopping after a bit,

i was driving mine earlier and it was fine again.

ive booked it in to be looked at a garage, when i told the mechanic what was happening he said that it sounds like the cambelt trying to grip...

Mine has a very faint whining noise, doesn't bother me as I am not planning to have the car that long :>

does it do it in neutral?

i had this on my old polo, it was the gearbox and i eventually lost 5th just before i changed it

no it doesnt do it in neutral, when i put it into gear, and lift the clutch and press the throttle it makes the noise, i think it does it when i press the throttle, only when its in gear though, the noise goes after 30 secs...

and its only ever happened after turning the engine on or after ive kept the car parked with the engine still running.

why are you getting rid of, it!! yours is so nice!!

It cost me £180 for clutch and bearing sleeve to be replaced. At 40 k though yours is unlikely to be the clutch. Have you thought about maybe looking at level of gearbox oil/ replacing gearbox oil for a high quality transmission oil?

It won't be your cam belt as it has teeth on it to stop it slipping (If it slipped your engine would be deaded). It may be the auxilliary drive belt then as mine made funny whining noises before I changed it for a new one.

If garage says it is your auxilliary belt (one which you can see spinning on the left side of the engine) Don't get the garage to fix it, they cost like £7 and takes 10 mins to do...

id check your gearbox oil level just to be sure

im not great with engines and stuff, but i am learning slowly :)
where do i check the oil level and what oil would i use to refill it?

i thought it may be that belt, i wasnt to sure what it was called though,
i dont think the garage would charge me a large amount seeing as i know the guy that owns the place ;)

but if i was to do it myself, where could i get hold of the belts and what else would i need, is it a basic swap?

thanks

i took it to the garage, after hours and hours of trying to get the noise to start again they found out that its not the gearbox oil or the auxiliary belt,
the problem was that front fan had come off its mounting bracket and as the car accelerated the fan was clipping the engine mount!!
im lucky it didnt fall off while driving it!!

thanks for the replies anyway
