Pretty much as the title says, you see a lot of diesel engines are 1.9 or 2.0 L and I was just wondering why that is. Sames true for petrol engines, why are 1.6 and 1.8 common engine sizes yet 1.7 is quite rare. I would guess it has something to do with tax or insurance brackets etc. Thanks for any info, just curious really.

I've never seen a 1.7 petrol.

I remember it used to be petrols were even and diesel were odd, though now that's not the case.

1.9 was to do with tax brackets. think the cut off was 2.0l so a lot of companies made their diesel engines 1.9, making them suitable as company cars, as they were cheaper to tax.

Guessing it must be the same with 1.7.

Renault used to have a 1.7litre engine, I used to have a Renault 5 with the 1.7 engine. It was a cracking little car when it was running.

Vauxhall do a 1.7 engine in NA and TD spec, although most of these early ones were made by Izusu, great engine, not powerfull, ran forever with not much attention.
