Just one thing, in UK insurance companies normally allow us to, if possible use any approved windscreen repair company to effect a repair by drying/cleaning the damaged area, vac'ng it and backfilling with a correct epoxy filler. Now that relies on the damage being repairable and returning the windscreen to nearly as good as it was prior to this damage, there might be a restriction on the areas of the windscreen that can be repaired and obviously limited by the size of the "hole". So some insurers in UK will either repair this free of charge or just charge a nominal amount of money for their approved repairer to complete this repair - and this will not affect any "no claims discount" so it will not be seen as a claim, although who is to say that the next year's renewal premium is not slightly bigger due to this incident.

Is the same thing for you in Portugal? I think getting a windscreen repair place to carry out this work would be wiser than buying a DIY kit if they are available for you.

Last year I had to have a repair on the late 2009 Ibiza repeated due to another stone hitting the same point in the windscreen!! I tried to get the original repair company to repair it for me without needing to pay for it as these repairs are meant to last for the life of that car - but that repairer was no longer the official repairer for this insurer (same insurer as when that repair was done originally), but, that repairer had changed their name slightly, so did not recognise any of the work carried out while they used another company name - that is not right!!

Yeah not too sure how it works abroad. I hear in UK that they do this for free but I've always said there has.to be some.catch? I just don't get why the insurance.companies would.offer.this for free with nor raise.on next year.premiums or anything I have always been skeptical and.curious of this??

Well if you mean an actual company coming out to do the job I had a.firend use Autoglass in UK and.it was flawless. And I know someone who did it via a kit and it was 90% percent perfect so if it's all free and no downside to going through 8nsurance then I would do that. But I would call your insurance.company and ask them

This process has been used at least here in UK for maybe 15+years - and still being used, so I would not worry about it. I had to get a chip repaired in my Passat back in 2001/2 and this late 2009 Ibiza has been repaired twice, I thought nothing about getting it done, I would be very concerned about getting a bonded windscreen replaced due to the surrounding, but hidden paintwork getting stripped back to the metal - then a few years later rust starting to appear at the edge of the windscreen. The tools used to quickly remove a bonded windscreen are very crude and very effective, but can cause a lot of hidden damage - and these glass replacement operators are not too bothered about what happens to that car two years down the line, most of them will be in the hands of new owners so why worry that operator will not be traceable?

Quite simple, insurance company does not need to pay for the majority of windscreens that get chipped as they will get repaired before the chip turns into a crack - which they will do with time, then it will need to get replaced, and that will cost the insurer more money.
