Wing mirror replacement advice please!

Hi Guys,

New here, so please go easy šŸ˜Š

So the wife managed to do in the driver side wing mirror when parking It in the garage. Cover is shattered, indicator light busted up and the folding mechanism is clunky. The mirror itself it ok but instead of trying to fix that up we got a replacement off ebay. For around Ā£50.

Only issue is the colour match of the cover. The body of the car is white, but the The Wing mirror covers are a ā€œtitaniumā€, at least thatā€™sā€™ what I saw on the inside of the broken one.

I just cant seem to find the exact colour or any in fact as most places sell covers in primer condition (to be painted) so Iā€™m just trying to track down the right colour paint, or if I can find the cover itself like for like? I know I can take it to a body shop and get it done, but I wonā€™t mind looking for a way to get this done myself. Might also save a few pennies.

So my questions areā€¦

  • Does anyone know where I can get the exact colour for the model of the car? (Seat Leon mk3 5 door hatchback FR.)
  • Or, can someone advice the best place to get the colours/materials to do it myself (where I guess Iā€™ll buy the pair of covers in primer colour) and also a step by step on how best to do this?
Or

Should I just take it to a body shop?

Many thanks in advance.

There are lots of versions of white.
You should find a sticker in your logbook or spare tyre well which has your paint colour PR code.

As to if you should paint it yourself? only you can decide that! Have you ever painted car body work? A wing mirror cover is probably the easiest part to paint as it is not joined to any other painted part - so you have more room for error with your paint match - less visible.
There are some specialist paint suppliers (not halfords!) who can supply mixed aerosols to various paint codes - if you can get a can & the appropriate lacquer for not much money why not give it a go? If you have any doubt just get it painted professionally.

Thanks for the response. Will have a look at that.

But if the wing mirrors colour isn't white (they're a grey/metallic) titanium colour where the body of the car is white. Will i still find the code somewhere? mabe on the unit itself? i shall have another look.

Thanks, looks like the guy found it but didn't leave a clue. Someone else said ZH9, but i'm not seeing that anywhere on the photo of the sticker i uploaded.

Titanium CK7 I would say.
I knew i came to the right place! many thanks my friend.

Also, just wondering, as the cover already comes primed, all i need in the areosol and a primer to finish it off right?

Weekend excitement sorted! haha

thanks again.

Will you need primer if the mirror cap is already primed? Youā€™ll need clear coat (lacquer) in addition to the titanium base coat though. Depending on how smooth the primed finish is on the mirror cap, you may need some fine wet and dry paper if itā€™s not ready to paint without some further preparation.

If youā€™ve never done any ā€˜rattle canā€™ paint spraying before, Iā€™d recommend you
  • watch some videos on YouTube first
  • practice perfecting your technique on another item (e.g. a metal object such as an old biscuit tin lid or similar) before you paint the mirror cap.
Preparation and taking your time is important- donā€™t rush, leave sufficient time between paint coats before applying the next coat, work in a clean, dry, warm and well ventilated area.

If your cover is primed I would imagine you need the aerosol paint and an lacquer (not a primer)
Do your research on spray painting - preparation is very important I believe. I've never painted bodywork.

Agree - preparation and not rushing is the key to getting a good result.

Iā€™ve used rattle cans to repaint DIY rust and dent repairs on old cars I owned back in the 1970ā€™s and 1980ā€™s. Itā€™s possible to get some pretty good results and it can be very satisfying too.

Thanks guys, will let you know how it turns out.

Also, having another look this evening I think can just replace the indicator light and cover without the need of a whole new unit. Fingers crossed.

Good luck in replacing your mirror.

However, wing mirrors have not been fitted to cars for decades - replaced by door mirrors.

Off topic, but Iā€™m old enough to remember seeing cars with wing mirrors back in the 1960ā€™s and 1970ā€™s - they were a common sight. One niggling car-related annoyance for me is when door mirrors on modern cars are referred to as wing mirrors šŸ™‚.

My other car-related annoyances are unnecessary use of rear fog lights, lane hoggers on dual carriageways and motorways and drivers who donā€™t use indicators to signal their intention (a.k.a Audi and BMW drivers šŸ¤£).

Apologies for going off topic. šŸ˜³

Could you not get the mirror covers wrapped by a car place. At least they'd match.

Ref the indicator light - I've just changed mine to the dynamic aftermarket ones. Much brighter than the originals. Might give you something else to do šŸ™‚

Years ago I had to replace the wing mirror cover on a Mk5 Golf and used Wing Mirror Man. I paid extra for them to paint it, it had go back as they didn't rub down the moulding lines but when I got it back again it was perfect.
