Hey all, my wipers go extremely slow when the engine is off, and eventally get quicker and quicker once you turn the engine on.

Taken the linkege apart and wiper arms and creased them all up but that has done no good  also used wd40

Maybe the wiper relay switch ?, anyone know what number is on the front of the block so i can get the right one first time ?

Last week they got slower and slower going down the motor way and eventally stopped. Put the wipers on fast mode and they slowely got faster and faster until they where going very quick indeed (as they should)

What do people think ?

Is it normal for the wipers to go alot slower when the engine is off, guessing not

many thanks :D

cheers for reply mate, yeah i have taken the linkage apart and creased them all up and also used some wd40.

Wipers havent stopped since, JUst very slow when engine is off. Once engine is on they seem fine.

Am i worying over nothing ? is it normal for the wipers to go slow and sound weak when engine is off on the mk4 ibiza, didnt do this on my mk3 ibiza

cheers again

This is normal mate, its because your running on ignition power not engine power so your not charging your battery etc

Thanks for help guys, turns out it was indeed a seized linkage (drivers side) took apart, sanded down and greased to the max with help from my amazing, helpful dad.

What a nightmare of a job ! everything went wrong such as wipers hiting of windscreen and stoping in the wriong area of the windscreen not too mention 2 broken wiper blades from all the hitting into bonnet etc.

However wipers work extremely well now and are very, very quick indeed even when engine is off. Which is how they should be for furture reference to people. Very pleased

If your experience these problems my advice is get it sorted as the problem wont go away and could eventally cause your wiper motor to burn out from the stress of a seized linkage. Easy to tell as passanger side linkage could be moved but driver side was un moveable due to rust and water getting inside.

Many thanks again Gac

My car's window wipers go slow when the engine is off as well. I just assumed it was something the car did to save battery.

Not necessarily, alot is to do with the relay being poor quality.
