The fan which blows air into the cabin is obviously conected to the circular control dial 0,1,2,3,4.

My question is, is there anything in between?

The switch is fine yet the fan only works on number 4.

I would have thought a problem on the fan would mean it did not work at all, however before I replace the fan I want to be sure that there is nothing such as a speed sensor, relay or resistor which could be the problem.

Thanks.

heater resistor or rheostat as its called is most likely melted up

they regulate the power to slow it down and when they blow it always seems to default to flat out 4 only

The heater resistor did melt due to a water leak but it was replaced.

There is some other damage visable in the immediate area so I think this may be the problem.

The fact that this heater resistor influences power of the fan is the bit of info I needed.

Cheers.
