My car is coming up on 10k. What are the main things i need to replace. I would like to do the work myself and just buy the parts from seat.

Also, how do i get the 'service' word off when i start up?

Thank You

You'll invalidate your warranty I believe. Its my understanding that while you don't have to go to a main dealer, you do have to use a VAT registered garage taht uses genuine parts and carries out the work according tp the Seat schedule. I may be wrong, but I don't think so - I'd check it out before you get stuck in.

Oil, filter, and then I think they spit on the screen and drag an oily rag across it, just before striping you for £190+.

On a more serious note, I don't specifically know - I'm sure someone will though.

The warrant issue isn't an issue any more. Car warranties are not allowed to dictate where you get the car serviced any more, the Government put a stop to that a couple of years ago.

Previously, if you bought a Seat you would have to have it serviced at Seat or else you void your warranty.
Now, this is banned, so the only requirements is the car is serviced according to the correct schedule with the correct parts.

Goto a local Skoda garage, I can't praise them enough.

Took my FR there for it's 10 & 20k services - both were at least £40 cheaper than SEAT, and the cust service was excellent !!!

They even knocked cash off when I went to pay as they'd overcharged me :)

That's a good tip, never thought of taking the car to Skoda! Personally, I've found a good independent garage - JKM in Portsmouth - and will stick to using them as they are quite a bit cheaper than Seat but I actually trust them to do a good job, as opposed to letting the YTS boy loose with my car at Seat.

Not necessarily for the simple services (10, 30, 50 etc) that are a fluid and filter change and inspection. If you have the ability to do a proper job using the correct parts, following the correct schedule then there is no harm in doing it yourself.

But you may find the lack of a proper service history will put any potential buyers off in the future when it comes to selling time. And also you'll have to prove beyond all doubt that you have correctly serviced the car when it comes to making any warranty claims. Legally you're fine, as mentioned above, but we all know how picky main dealers can be so make sure you have detailed records of everything changed / serviced.

The VAT registered company must be an old thing, thanks for correcting that Rob.

Wrighty, the £190 was for the 20k service, for an LCR (which I was told was slightly more expensive because of the oil they use.)

The 30k serivce, including change of brake fluid was £237 last month.

The VAT registered thing comes into play with warranty claims, but not servicing. As an example, when I had problems with my LCR I really didn't want to take the car to Seat for a number of reasons (idiots, YTS boys, clueless fools and no rolling road to diagnose the problem.. take your pick). I called the warranty holding company and was told that I can take it to any VAT registered garage to have it repaired. So I went to JKM in Portsmouth who diagnosed the problem, fixed it and sent the bill to the warranty company :)

What part of the country are you in? There are loads of good independent VAG specialists around the country that will offer a better and more honest service often for a cheaper price. They can also be more flexible when it comes to what they do, so if you're happy to do, say, the oil and filter changes yourself and then let them do the rest and stamp the book, you get the best of both worlds.

Obviously what they will and wont do varies from one place to the next, but if you let the forum know your location I'm sure somebody will be able to recommend somewhere.

I would probably do the oil and filter myself yes. Im from a place near Glasgow, would appreaciate if someone could tell me VAG specialists around here.

Its just a thought, but I assumed the reason we go to main dealers is because they know exactly what parts to replace and when, and of course the whole issue about how good it looks when you sell the car.

Personally i'd much rather buy a car with main dealer service history,I always ask for it too.

That does help mate. ive been there before. £90 sounds fair for the service but i cant really justify spending that on what is essentially a oil and filter change and obviously the stamp im the book.

When it comes to selling time, that stamp in the book might be worth more than you think. If you want though, most garages will let you supply your own oil, so that might shave a few pound off the price?
