o2m shim - NO shaft play!

So I had all the symptoms of needing to do the o2m shim mod. Whining on overrun between 4th & 3rd and 3rd & 2nd.

Took the end plastic cap off and noticed straight away it smelt of gearbox oil and had a nice puddle. Cleaned it up and grabbed the shaft and gave it a tug. Had zero play. So i had another tug and still nothing!

Completly baffled and a bit concerned a fitted a new cap and took it for a drive and couldn't recreate the noise. In any gears...

I'm hoping it's fixed but I'd be surprised.


Anyone got any ideas?

Why not do the mod anyway?

A, my circlips were too big. B, I presumed due to no shaft play the shim wouldn't fit.

Could a previous owner already have done the 02 shim? I still had play in mine after fitting the shim, it quietened my fifth gear whine until the gearbox crapped out on me. Now the gearbox is fixed the 5th gear whine is back.
