If you want to **** up your engine a tuning box is just good for you. These things continually give bad signals to your engine, which eventually will lead it to fail. A remap is completely new software for you engine. A good remap will cost you about 400-600pounds, and will give your engine 25-35max extra hp.
Remember you don't have a pd engine so I would think 25 extra hp is gonna be it for you.

You can find a billion articles about why it is more fun to trow your money down the toilet than to buy a tuning/powerbox. Im glad for you your engine is still running (as you claim it is), consider yourself one of the lucky ones.
But I prefer to save some money and put some decent mods on my ibiza FR.
Im not being ironic or anything believe me :)

I don't think anyone will challenge the fact that tuning boxes can't give the same outright power gains as a good remap, or be as smooth, but I think to say they will cause your engine to fail is somewhat extreme and misleading...yes they might cause your engine to overfuel a bit, but the worst that will happen is a bit more smoke.
Remember also that people now use the term "Tuning Box" to refer to a variety of devices from the simple 2-pin replace-the-temp-sender-with-a-resistor type, to more sophicated laptop-tuneable devices from reputable companies - which are hardly comparable.
"Tuning Box" is the name of one of the longest-established diesel tuning companies, in operation for over 10 years. If their entire product line were just going to "**** up your engine" I find it hard to believe they would still be trading with a good reputation after this long :)
 
Some engine and ECU's have been damaged due to tuning boxes being fitted, but it is rare.

The laptop tuning boxes are just a fancy way of changing the voltage and resistance at certain RPM's to reduce smoking at certain loads.

I can supply both digital tuning boxes, and re-maps, but would never choose a tuning box over a re-map on my car, and nor would any other professional tuner.

Exacly, If you want less smoke buy a decent remap en shut off your EGR. Or make sure you have a other exhaust.

i have a 1.9 TDI SE 110
i have found a company that claims that they can chip the 110 se upto a 140BHP engine it costs £235

Depending on the year, we actually re-map these engines for that price!!

A tuning box will never touch a proper re-map, both in terms of performance and drivability.

If you can get a re-map, then have a re-map.

Hi, well firstly, I am doubtful that a 30bhp and a decent torque increase would be possible from the box, without smoking and general poor running. (We can supply boxes by the way, but a re-map is the way to go ;) )

The normal re-map will give a minimum +30bhp and +60NM of torque.

A harder map can be written, offering a +40bhp and +75NM of torque increase.

Most customers find the 1st option is plenty. All the above is acheived with minimal smoke, superb running, and power all the way through the rev range.
