It matters not it is only available on the petrol 2.0 tfsi, not the 170 tdi which is also rated @ 258lbft as the new S3 is...... i willl say again it is the torque that is the bug bear with the DSG / S tronic, the 200ps in the golf or altea is o.k as the torque is below the rating of the box;)

just noticed you can get DSG on the new Golf GTI edition 30 (230ps) this looks to have the same max torque as the cupra, 300nm from 2200 to 5500 rpm

R32 also has more torque and holds it for longer and has DSG

probably is due to the cupra being a turbo and worries about overboosting pushing the torque too high, that and the inevitable chipping that will come with it

uncanny was just on the cupra mini site checking torque you are right both 221 lbft cupra pegged back me thinks, as not to trump Audi on dsg option the dsg box is good for around 250 lbft but they like a bit of a saftey margin, remember the Audi is £7.5K more too so if the cupra had this box it might steal too many S3 sales:D

I've read two magazine reports which have both said that the Cupra runs the same gear (turbo / uprated internals) as the S3, so it must just be detuned.

I can see it having been a political decision in the VAG group and am pretty certain the Cupra will tune to the same level as the S3 with a remap.

The Cupra won't suffer the transmission loss of the S3 so will have more power on the rollers, and as long as it can plant it all down on the tarmac in real world terms it could be the quicker car.

Hey - if they can get it to work on the Veyron, it should be OK on the Leon Cupra!

Granted, the Veyron uses a different (presumably more expensive) box, but uses the same technology.

The R32 has 247bhp/236ft lb - not that dissimilar to the Leon.

I personally think it's VAG not watning to gimp their uber marques - although omitting it from the S3 is an odd step.

A mate has the Leon DSG, and having been in it, I'm not sure I could stand to order a non-DSG car. Maybe I'm getting old!!!

The Veyron is made by Ricardo and has 7 gears where as the one in the Golfs is made under licence from Borg-Warner.

I did notice the new R36 Passat has one as standard, but I haven't been able to find any torque figures for it yet.

Considering the UK was the R's biggest market and that it is known that finding one that isn't modded is probably a rarity, I personally don't think it's an accident the Cupra is a de-tuned S3 rather than an extreme GTI. I'm sure that's not the only factor in their decision, but I'm sure it was taken into account.

Win win as far as I'm concerned. :)

Just a quickie as a follow-up to my last post: the Cupra specification for the UK market is confirmed as per the information released with the price a couple of weeks ago. This means that SEAT Sport-developed brake callipers are used, painted bright red.

Incidentally, I'm flying out to Madrid tomorrow with a second small group of UK media to test the Cupra. This time I will actually try to get behind the wheel myself, and will give you some feedback on what I think (as unbiased as is possible!)

I went on a training course yesterday on the new Altea XL, to my surprise the new Cupra was there as well.

We was given a taster session on the Cupra, :D and I think you'll find there is still a couple of things in the pipe line for the Cupra!!!!!!!!! ;) BUT... it wont be immediate!! As for the brakes i think you'll find they are not going to be Brembos as yet but that will change in the near future!!!
