i have read a few threads about this with the altea so i took mine to my local seat dealer they said they needed to see it happen but as i tried to explain it will not do it on demand they are not convinced how have your dealers handled this or any help would be appreciated

carl

Mine did it occasionally (once a month), then got worse to such a degree that it was turning on within 10 minutes. It kept coming up with a "CD Drive Error" too. Only then could I take it to the dealer, but I had to wait a few weeks for a replacement head unit, then a few more weeks for the correct one (!), before it was finally fixed. In the meantime, I had to pull the fuse out every night to preserve the battery.

The dealer did originally say they would send my unit off to be reconditioned (thereby leaving me with a whopping hole in my dash) but eventually relented and agreed to order a new one.

Apparently its quite a well known fault with the stereo

Happened with the wifes altea which blasted music at 3am for about a week-I thought it was a car nearby and was going out to sort whoever it was, as I'd had enough, only to discover it was the altea!!!

Phoned dealer and 3 days later car into dealers and they replaced with no prob. Said that they had 6 alteas in with the same problem.

cool but its sods law that mine will go in to the dealer and it will not happen then they will say it hasnt got a fault do i have an argument for a replacment

do what i did, just drop into the conversation that your a member of SCN and you've read many reports of the faulty unit. This seemed to prevent any attempt by the dealer to argue... dead.

If still not playing ball then just go to another dealer who is prepared to help and take your future custom there or get onto to seat uk

My radio has now developed the same switch on at random symptoms - already booked in for service on Monday so see what happens!! Might just drop in to conversation about how many already ssem to have this problem..... if they change it wonder if for a small fee they could make it an MP3 version - will let you know.

Best sollution : Replace Headunit !
Did so on mine from the second day I go the car.
And btw , the standard speakers work just fine with an aftermarket unit.

I might beg to differ on that if you'd said

"And btw , the standard headunit works just fine with aftermarket speakers"

I'd agree but the other text is impossible, with cheap Philips paper speakers as Seat fits the system is crap, and spoilt by the speakers. The Blaupunkt headend is good and isn't worth changing against the hassle it would give unless you like to make your car unique and the sterio nickerable.

Hehehe , I have to say I really like my Alpine and it does play nice with standard speakers if you tweak it to fit the needs.

My VW Passat had superbe speakers that did not needed replacement.
And I would kile to see the tief trying to steal my hu :D

I kidded myself that the Seat ones were OK for three months and then I stopped !. They produce a wall of rushy sound.

Sure your not adapting the sound to fit the ability of the speakers not to distort it which might not be the sound envelope you'd get with decent speakers and your headend which would be much better.

I have spent way to much money on customizing my cars and I decided I have to stop :D so I now adjust the stereo to fit the speakers and don't play to loud as i'm getting old and deaf :D

Yeah , a new set of speakers would do miracles , but the Headunit in the seat just sux ... sorry to say it but it does.

the last comment doesn't really stack up if Tell's had (v)good results from just changing the speakers  :headhurt:

Maybe it sounds ok , but it is just one big piece of metal.
Mine was at least , and I had the model with CD player only.

Admit it , you can't compare a high end Alpine with the Seat OEM ..

that's not the argument/query, it was your comment that the Seat HU sux when in Tells experience it obviously doesn't. Being a long time home 'hifi/music' fan i fully appreciate the existence of one unit sounding better than another.

Yep , and it still sux.
Buttons placed annoying , the volume button to far from the driver (I drive on the left side) , enetering the menus for adjusting the sound settings will jump way to fast back to main menu , CD tray not protected from dust , display useless when the sun wil hit it in the morning when I drive to work.

To use a comparison it would be like buying expensive hifi equipment and using £15 paper speakers which is what the Altea's are. The real component in hifi is the speakers, not the amplier. The latter is the one that hifi buffs get off on, but sort out your speakers then think about upgrading the rest, it applies to the Altea as well :). Changing the headend in the Altea but not changing the speakers isn't the way to go, I really don't think you need to change the Altea headend as far as everyday sound quality is concerned, but speakers you do.

I understand ergonomics too, but surely you have a stereo in your car/house etc first and foremost to listen to music ?

Gigel, i'm not having a go at you and understand concerns regarding ease of use and so on, but surely it's the sound that really really matters above all else ?

Went in to have the phantom switching radio replaced - new one found to be faulty as well........(by the dealer) so trying again tomorrow!!! No they wouldn't swap under warranty for an MP3 equipped one and a few notes. And service book not stamped either - otherwise as far as I can tell the service was fine....!!!!
