What does this do and should it have started buzzing?

Firstly apologies if you have just read this elsewhere but I though I may get a broader range of answers here.

I need a little help in identifying what exactly the device in my pictures does and whether I should start getting worried about it as it has started buzzing loudly. It can be heard the car over the engine tone.

I believe it may something to do with the vacuum system on the car as several pipes lead to the air box, turbo, and the inlet mainfold. I know its not the vacuum pump itself as this is located on the side of the engine block and has a single larger pipe going to the brake servo.

It starts doing it when I am stuck in traffic so I am only moving at low speed but useing the brakes a lot.

What I have found is that when it is buzzing, if i pump the brake pedal 3/4 times it will stop, but if I'm still in the traffic it soons starts again.

The only other sympton I have noticed and I'm not sure if its related or not is that the ABS warning light occasionally comes back on again for a couple of seconds after starting, but it does go back off.

The car: Mk4 Ibiza, 1.9Tdi (100) on an 03 plate, and has covered 40,400 miles. Engine code is ATD if that is any help

pressure control valve for egr and turbo and no it shouldnt be buzzing.

that is normal for abs to do that if there was a fault then it would be on all the time ,all its doing is a selftest

I assume that if it fails then damage could be done either to the turbo or the egr valve or even both.

Thanks for the info on ABS light that puts my mind at ease a bit.

Is it something that can just be swapped out for a new one (ie I can do it) or is a garage/dealer job?

no just the engine warning light will come on/lack of power etc
yer you can do it just take pipes off one by one

The reason I ask is that I've had a sort-of "whirring" noise that occasionally starts up. And now I come to think of it, it does seem to happen when I'm stuck in traffic. My noise is definitely a "whirring" rather than a buzzing sound (though I've never actually lifted the bonnet to see what it sounds like close up). It follows the revs of the engine (PD130).

Right let me just confirm if I've got this right. If it fails the EM light will come on and basically I'll have SDI power of sorts as no there will be no Turbo assistance.

If I change the unit will I have the EM light come on still and need to get this cleared? Will I notice any ill effects why it 'settles in'?

Err I don't know, I haven't actually tried that. When it nexts does it I'll try and check as it it may do. I didn't get stuck tonight so it didn't get chance to do it today.

Wouldn't you expect that to be a permanent noise, though? My whirring noise comes and goes.

My tensioner pulley on the drive belt (alternator belt) whirs continously, worse when its cold. I have learnt to ignore it. I willl get that changed when I get the cambelt done. I actually caught my Pressure controller thing in the act yesterday which is how I know it was it that was buzzing and not the belt tensioner.

they are weird you get em at all sorts of rpms
