Scratches/dents/make sure any optional extras asked for are there/check all the door windows by winding them down then up to see if they come back up wet on the inside/make sure everything works properly lights etc.
Take someone with you (best mate etc) who is less emotionally involved (read:happy as a 4 year old with an Ice Cream) they can check the vehicle over and give a balanced opinion.
take camera for pix if problems maybe?
take your time to test everything - even under the seats - my 2nd hand one was cleaned yesterday sir etc etc - BUT nails and bits of plaster under spare tyre and muck under rear seats = not happy bunny = so do take your time to check it., How long did it take to look, test-drive, haggle and buy? Mine was over an hour - so maybe take a long look without feeling guilty as it's usually a lot of dosh to spend and then to find mistakes later... oh yes, I also found a screw in the spare tyre........
