Ive had my mk2 cupra 8valve for over 2 years now and think its time for a change. So what should i do? Sell her and buy a mk2 16v cupra or get a mk3 cupra? I was tempted to go engine transplant but id have to pay for the labour (about £1500 for labour i think) so may work out abit expensive.

What do you guys reckon?

depends on what engine you want to put in ;) Some conversions are (of course) easier than others depending on wiring mostly, i believe. Eg. a 16v transplant would be easier than a 1.8t....

vr6 transplant should be quite cheap by now? cheaper to get hold of than a 1.8t.

and then you could do some forced induction wizardry, if you really want to burn some fuel :)

It depends what you want from your next car? If your wanting to tune it up to get some serious performance then deffinatley go for the Mk3.

If you are like me and like the retro look of Mk2 then go for a 16v.

sells yours and buy greggs kiwi cupra

Here here!

After much deliberation I went for another 16V with plans to tune & supercharge it eventually (well once I've got some NCD) as I wanted the individuality of the MK2!

Really depends on how much time and effort you want to spend as tuning a MK3 will be simple compared to a MK2,

I always make my life difficult

Plus enless I knew the mechanic or had seen plenty of his work that had done a few thousand trouble free miles I'd walk from a 500 quid transplant, i'd say inbetween would be about right £1000 if you go that route!

Im seriously thinking about it.

I love the mk2 shape (hence on my 2nd one). And we've got a mk2 2l 16v in the family now. Its faster than my 8v (even from low revs) but i think i want something faster.

Maybe i need to try and persuade my mechanic to 'sort' me out and see what his reply is lol.

Ahhhh!!! I think im the most indecisive person in the world!!

Unless the 8v engine is seriously buggered there's no real sense in swapping it for a 2.0 16v or a 1.8t, they are slightly faster, but not enough to warrant spending £1000+ to end up with an ever so slightly faster car. Plus insuring an engine conversion is more difficult that insuring a standard 1.8t or 2.0 16v

If your after a really noticeable difference in power, your going to have to be looking at much bigger standard bhp engines like a VR6. I have owned both 2.0 8v and 16v engines and regularly drive an Audi A3 1.8t 150. There really is a negligible difference between them.

I dont really want something thats only alittle bit faster. Saying that i was under the impression that the 1.8t would be kicking out around 200bhp. Surely thats going to be alot more noticeable than my 8v??

Oh my 8v is running fine once warmed up (hopefully i haven't jinked myself) lol.
