i think my water pimp might have packed up....

i have an 03 plate LCR AMK engine.

i was driving along (failry fast) and all of a sudden the temp shot up, and it started beeping at me. i pulled over right away.

the temp went right upto 120, it has NEVER gone above 90 before.

i turned off the engine, and the temp came down fairly quickly.

started driving again, and the same happened.

im thinking that the water pump has failed (common fault) and when i switch off the engine the electric pump comes on, with the fans on full and brings the temp down fairly quickly.

the car has done about 48k miles and is still on its original w/pump.

i cant think of what else it might be, any ideas.....

plastic impellar on the water pump has proberby shattered, had my belts done a while back when i looked at the old pump the impeller was in a million bits

just been out for another short drive, the temp warning was flashing and beeping from cold, the temp shot up to 90 far quicker than normal, and carried on beeping. i didnt let it go any higher than 90 this time. maybe its just the sensor? i will have to find out tomorrow.

It sounds like a waterpump to me mate, I wouldn't be driving it around till u know for sure and get it fixed asap to avoid further damage

yup waterpump!! It went on mine, make sure you get the tt one as it has the metal blades and will stop it happening again. Cheap enough (£30 new delivered) but might aswell get the belts done and the job takes a good few hours (thank you dad, saved me a good few quid)

been to the garage today....

water pump seems ok, possably the sensor. he's not sure yet, it was doing really strange things, there was even head gaskets talked about...

noticed that i have the 'no slow fan' fault as well, so i have ordered a new pair of fans, unsure if this will affect the original problem, but it needs to be done regardless.
so much for paying off the credit card ready for christmas!

i actualy work at a motor factors, and have got all the parts i might need all ready today, just got to wait till wednesday for the fans to arrive.

Im sure the slow fan issue is down to the temp sensor mate as it has two settings, or there is a separate sensor. im pretty sure you dont need a new fan!!!

Sorry to butt in on your thread buddy, anyone got a part number and/or supplier (or is it genuine only?) for the metal impeller water pump? Cambelt due soon and I want it done at the same time and I want to supply the pump so I can guarantee its the metal impeller. Thanks

the part number for the metal pump is FWP1805. thats a firstline number, any motor factor should be able to get it for you.

im suspecting my head gasket has gone now, im loosing water. happy christmas!

Have you checked for leaks on the plastic connector at the bottom of the radiator? Mine split and dumped the coolant, temp shot up... this was a while ago now, probably only about 15k on it at the time. The radiator was changed under warranty, so don't know exactly what failed, definately a 'plastic part' had split, either the side of the radiator or a connection at the bottom...

i was going to say the same, the part of the coolant pipework at the bottom of the radiator is particularly suseptable as its a simple o ring seal that keeps it from leaking and may get bent / damaged on particularly bad speed bumps.

This is also where the drain plug is for the radiator.
If this leaked it may have contributed to the temps seen, maybe even an air lock.
You may not see a puddle under the car due to the undertray and a slow leak.

Take the undertray off and take a look :)
