Hi... Well, this is my first post..!

We have a Seat Cupra 1.9 TDI that's developed a bad smoking habit! Right from cold it produces black smoke and is lacking power. After a time the smoke disappears together with the power! We're lucky if you can get 60mph out of it...

Any advice..?

Cheers...

MAF? Clogged air filter? Blocked EGR valve? Blocked intake .... ?

How many miles and how long has it been doing it for and has it got worse over time?

Thank you for the reply... It does seem to have become worse... It started by just giving little surges of power while cruising, which became progressive more frequent and pronounced. I would say it's been over the last 3 weeks or so.

Lots of people on here have something called VAG-COM which is a interface to plug a laptop into the cars electronics.

This will generate fault codes and give you a better chance of understanding the problem(s).

Edit your profile and enter your location, then post in the VAG-COM area asking for VAG-COM help.

Sounds to me like you blew a turbo hose off, or got a split / hole in one. Removing your cat will not help if that (or anything else really) is your problem.

hello and welcome :D

as mentioned before, boost hose could have split or popped off.
pop the bonnet and get somebody to rev it whilst you have a look around.
should hear a loud hissing if its a split, if a hose has popped of, you'll know ;)

if its a MAF sensor, i remember reading that if you unplug it and take it for a drive,
apparently normal service should resume, but this shouldn't be done for a long period of time ;)

i recently bought a MAF from Anchor Car Parts (google:whistle:), for about £50 delivered, compared with £84 at the dealer :ban:

by the way, which cupra have you bought, leon / ibiza

I'd try unplugging MAF first and taking it for a quick blast. Simple test and good chance it's that, best place to start. Guy at work had the exact same symptoms on his Diesel (although not a Seat) and after unplugging the MAF the problem went. His is being replaced tomorrow by the dealer.

The symptoms he described could indicate a boost leak -- not enough air for good combustion, so lots of smoke, low power, and poor fuel economy.

Maybe a MAF sensor, but if so I think the problem would have arisen more gradually. Still, it would be easy to swap in a known good MAF sensor from someone in his neighborhood.

hello i get the same on start up,but the power and mpg is fine, any ideas why it might smoke,oh its black smoke,
thanks
