there doesn't seem to be a guide on how this is done.is there any gaskets involved in the removal and refit?
are there any pitfalls i should look out for when taking it off? as you can see from the image i think its over due a clean,or is there something more sinister afoot?

I you don't want the valve to work, just disconnect the pipe thats attached to the top and plug it with a bolt or something. I did that and it works fine, slighly better fuel economy and possibily a bit more power!!

Or get one of Allards replacement pipes

Not sure on the procedure jase, but am interested to know as the EGR on my latest Passat is pissing oil everywhere too.

If someone has ETKA they could perhaps post up a diagram of how it connects to the adjacent pipework, and to see if there are any gaskets
I imagine there must be some sort of gasket or O-ring.

what does EGR stands for?
Exhaust Gas Recirculation

It's a valve that recirculates some exhaust gas back into the inlet under certain conditions, it helps reduce NOx emissions.
A lot of people disable the EGR valves, because the sooty exhaust gas has been known to mix with the oily fumes from the crankcase ventilation (which are also released into the inlet), resulting in crud building up in the inlet and causing some restriction.
If you want to find out how to disable EGR, do a search for it, been discussed a lot in the past :)

Muddy, if you are getting a lot of oil in your intake, how about fitting an oil catch tank, something like this:

there's a reusable O ring and the gasket to the underside manifold flex pipe you may want to replace if you're not blocking it off, the ASV capsule pipe should be cut off not pulled it WILL break off best cut it 2-3 inches long and reconnect later, also if you remove the capsule from it's crank warm it first (the conrod)
