Hi guys, 1st and 2nd gears dont work in my car

Ive spoken to a few people, half of them say its the Gearbox selector the other half say il need to get a whole new Gearbox.

anyone had a problem like this? Or does anyone know what to do??

Many Thanks

Can you still get reverse? I think if it was the selector you wouldn't be able to get reverse as this is past the 1st/2nd axis on the box - but i am in no way knowledgeable about gearboxes. just an opinion!

THe reason the other half are saying get a new gearbox is because if it IS the selector fork then the only way to repair it is to strip the gearbox down to access the broken retaining rivets and replace with appropriate nuts and bolts so it's a specialist job. You're going to be looking at £400+ for a rebuild so possibly cheaper to find a second hand box.

1st and 2nd going IS indicative of a broken selector...

Have you cheked the linkage...I once had my oil breather filter fall off some how and get lodged on top of the gear box and stopped the linkage from moving!

i just took my box out of my tdi tdoy as it was making a noise like the release bearing but it turnes out the imput shaft bearings have had it. oh bugger. so tuesday i will be taking it to be reconed, with stronger bearings hopefully.
Your problem sounds like a linkage problem. Does it go into the gears you can't get when the egine isn't runing. If it does then i'd say you have an internal problem with a broken baulk ring (part of the syncro). If you still cant get the gears then i would gues its just something with the linkage. Try getting someone to try and put it into gear whilst you watch which way the cables are trying to move the selector on the top of the box. Then i'd dissconnect the cables and try putting it in the gear by hand. if it goes into gear try starting up and making sure it is 1st or 2nd you,ve got. If it does go into gear then your cables prob just need some adjustment. But if you still can't get the gears then you've 5hit out mate like me.
