Got one of these for my birthday last week, thought I'd give it a go when the weather dried up.

The test subject was my 1992 Golf Driver 1.8 in red. She's led a good life but clearly all of it outdoors and is a rather fetching, if totally uneven, shade of pink. The driver's side front wing is practically white with old paint.

I’d tried to polish it out by hand with a combination of T-Cut, Autoglym SRP and various waxes but as soon as the rain came it was back to white.

The offending panel – I’ve already done the bonnet here btw.

So I set about the front end of the car, following the instructions closely in terms of speed– and using the packaged combination of Sonus SFX 1, 2 and 3 topped off with some Meguiars gold class wax.

To do the two front wings and the bonnet probably took about 3 hours in total, although I wasn’t in a hurry and there was some chopping and changing of pads.

Overall I’m pretty pleased with the results.

The ‘white’ wing looks a lot healthier although it is clear that I need to go back to it with a more even handed approach – you can see where the elbow grease has deserted me!

The front end finished.

Hopefully the contrast between old (the door) and new is pretty clear – it’s night and day in the flesh.

I’m not kidding myself – this is a 100k car with numerous chips and scratches and will never be show room, but I’m massively impressed with the results I’ve achieved so far and they were far, far better than I could have achieved by hand (I tried a couple of weeks ago and gave up tbh)

I intend to go over the car bit by bit – probably the doors, then the rear quarters, roof and boot (which looks very fiddly – I could use a smaller backing plate and pads) and will report back hopefully by the end of the week with some stunning pics!

Nice job! Looks ( and feels) so much nicer when done doesn't it.

Well I bent down to unplug the UDM, leant on the bonnet and nearly went arse over tit - it was THAT smooooooooth.

Part of me can't wait to do the rest of the car, the other part has tired arms...it was heavier than I thought but well worth it.

Yeah it's definitely not easy ... but you get far better results for the energy you do expend and the time it takes. It's oddly satisfying to see a really nice shine return from what was dull and tired paint. Future maintenance is so much easier once you've done it the first time :)

Well it’s taken a couple of days but the golf has changed from this rather sorry looking thing…

I’ve resprayed the wheels too, replaced a couple of pieces of trim and restored the rest with linseen oil (genius stuff).

I’m proud of her – that UDM’s a magic piece of kit and if I can use it and get these kind of results it really is idiot-proof.

Cheers for the feedback folks!

Only had the step down transformer on hire for a week from Speedy tho (£15, not bad when your missus has a trade account through work) - but will be investing in one permanently asap!

Now to take on the swirling on the LCR...:funk:

Your pics have perswaded the missis tolet me have one , good work.

that looks amazing mate - such a difference. it brings back memories of a similar colour old polo I t-cutted with my bro 2 years ago; we didn't get quite as impressive results, but as it was for his mongol rally drive it didn't really matter!

:lol::lol::lol:
Good luck with it, it really is as simple as it looks. I've no desire to move on to the more powerful, and potentially damaging, machine polishers. I can see this thing lasting me a long time (touch wood!)

The problem is I was out last night waxing...it's becoming an obsession...

that is a great transformation mate!! nicely done

that wing almost looked too faded to be restored!

Great job fella - Ive been looking into getting one of the UDMs for a while now - So are you gonna Euro it now??!

Cheers!

The plan is to take this one around Europe (and do the 'ring!) this summer and then sell it on. It's my first project car and I played it safe as she only needed a few engine/chassis tweaks to get her up to spec.

Take whatever money I get and invest in a mk1 or a mk2 cabriolet that needs a bit more work 'cos I get bored easily and there's always a few on ebay. THAT's going to get the works - bigger brakes, a big bumper conversion if it hasn't already got one, proper Euro stylee wheels etc. etc.
