Hi all just joined up - So please excuse my n00bness. I have no idea YET about the Seat Ibizas so be nice since this is my first post.

I am currently over on cliosport.net and will be looking to upgrade my car soon (have been driving around in a 1.2 16v for 2 years).

My friend used the VAG 1.8 20VT engine to build the "Clio TT":

I am aware that these engines were put in a few cars within the VAG group and have decided to upgrade to an ibiza Cupra(around 02/03), due to the price of them, and i like the look of them.

Over on CS.net there are obviously biast views over cupras Vs clio sports. The overall concensus is that Cupras are built well/reliable however clio's are lovable/more fun and handle that little bit better, hence why im here to get a fair view of the cars. Now for the questions :D

1) what insurance group are the ibiza Cupras (not the R just the normal one)
2) what power stock do they have? ( i think its around 180BHP however i know there peasy to tune)
3) Whats living with one like, EG running costs, repair costs, tax etc?
4) Can anyone provide a link to a buyers guide to help me when i come to buy one? (im aware il probably need to be a paid member but i know its worth it)

Finally, apologies if any of the above is a repost but as said "N00b" :p

Thanks anyways, Luke

Hi Mate
1) the standard cupras are group 15 and the R's are 17
2)The standard cupra has 156bhp and the R has 180bhp
3)Tax is £210 for the year and the car is a bit thirsty when town driving or stopping and starting but on the motorway there amazin!!:D I drove from scotland edinburgh to bristol 410 miles at 90 -95mph occasionaly putting my foot down a bit ;) and it only cost me £80 odd and ive got a ibiza cupra R
4) not really sure but i know Parkers.co.uk has a sort of guide with all the stats!!

also with some coilovers and a good set of tyres the handling will be improved alot!

hope this helps

Cheers for the reply mate,

another thing, what do they have as standard as the clio sports come with climate control, speedlimited, cruise control, auto lights/wipers and Xenons etc.

what do u get with these?

They have climate control, trip computer with average mpg ect, traction control/esp on a button, half leather and prob a couple of other small bits but cant remember off the top of my head!

That clio looks very intersting!! I came across a 172 yesteday and i can safely say he wanted to play, but wasn't quite up for the challenge!! :p Mind it was a bit unfair as im not running stock figures!
You won't be disappointed with a cupra mate, incredible fun, looks and even rarity!!

Yes matey, was a scary car and an awesome sleeper.

was running 487BHP and we had it up to 198MPH on the RR (of course it wouldn't do this on the road).

A std cupra with a few tweaks would murder a clio 172 am i right?

its not just the engine thats swaying me though its the build quality, and being able to drive to the shops with no rattles or squeeks!

487bhp!! jesus.. any chance of a list of mods??? bet thats crazy in a such a small car!

well the build quality probably isnt the greatest. mine has covered a lot of miles though! but i'm having fun finding all these squeeks lol. gives me something to do with my boring weekends :)

Well it wasn't even a shadow on me put it that way! 487 from the 20vt lump... that's INSANE!!! Do you think it would've gone beyond 200mph?
As for build quality there's nothing to fault really imo, as all you'll find under the shell are audi/VW parts so it's a solid ole chap!! These are real sleepers and as you've already noticed they're easy to increase bhp.

A good reason for buying a Cupra is....it aint french lol.

Nah seriously mate there are worth there weight in gold no matter what anyone says. Obviously they do brake down just like any other car on the road, but they are a great drive and can really upset a few people by how quick they are.

A good price these days for one it good condition with fair mileage is £3500 - £4000.

Firstly id look in the for sale section on here and then on pistonheads

Thankyou everyone for your replys, i think i will go ahead and just buy one when this years no claims has come through!

Are they any buyers guides on here specifically for the cupra or shall ijust check all the usual stuff?

Back on topic! thanks alot for all your help and im sure il be posting alot more questions!

Luke :)

What a beast of an air filter! Bet that soaked a lot of heat? Not much room to re-locate it tho from the looks of it! Like the paint job a lot but the wheels almost make it look like its been painted by hand...? A set of black 172 wheels would be awsome!
The search function is your best way of finding out 'stuff' for the cupra, it's an absolute bible!! :worship:
