Not sure how many 2.0 8v mk4 owners on here, but having put the word round locally to see what's about I've heard about one of these wee beasties possibly coming up for sale.

I'd just like to guage owners opinions of them before I go and see it.
It's been used as a family hack so is a bit rough round the edges apparently (a few scrapes and scratches and the odd parking ding) but well enough maintained and should be fairly cheap to reflect this.

My 17 year old Polo is coming up for MOT and there's a few jobs need doing on it this year (normally flies through) so undecided whether to scap it. I've also been offered an Arosa 16v (see thread in Arosa section) which I'm keen on but the Beezer is likely to be a bit cheaper. I don't normally spend more than a few hundred quid on my run about car (paid £500 for my Polo about 5 years ago) so don't want to buy a money pit and all the cheap older SEATs I've glanced over lately are going a bit rusty on the seams.

And please, no '' get a TDI '' comments, been there, done that and need a smallish petrol town car this time round. :p The TDIs are just too expensive and won't get the use to justify this. Probably 3k miles a year tops.

The 2.0 8v isnt a smallish petrol town car however  its a gaz guzzer thats slow? Which I can only imagine what would happen to the road tax for it?

I know you said please, however 1.4 TDi FTW from what I can read. (if only to justify your username ;) )

I class the 2.0 as small in a shell that weighs as much as the Beezers does :p. I'm currently borrowing my Mum's Citroen, this thing has a 1.4 engine and it feels like it has a flat spot between 2000 and 5500rpm!!!! I need cubic capacity.

It won't be a gas guzzler compared to my 2.0 tfsi and as it will only do short journeys I can't see it being that much worse than any other smallish four cylinder motor on warm up cycle. If I had anything smaller than a 1.6 I think I'd buy a push bike.

Not a fan of 1.4TDIs (heard many a story about detonating bottom ends from an exVAG dealer mechanic I know) plus they are well over my 'cheap as possible' budget.

I can't see how a 1.4 16v can compare to the 2.0 8v for my sort of driving. Go find a torque graph for the 1.4 100bhp engine, it has a huuuge dip through the mid range IIRC.

Anyway back on topic - how does the 2.0 8v stack up, not what car is better than  I've grown up with the 8v GTI engines and love 'em, okay so the mk4 isn't as quick as a mk2 (which isn't very quick) but it's quick enough for chugging around town without having to scream the tits off it.

I went on track at castle combe when i had my 1.4 16v 75hp and i overtook my mate in a 2.0 8v  a 100hp 1.4 16v would easily be quicker than a 2.0 8v imo. Soon aftet that, my mate had his 2.0 remapped and got 4bhp for his £300 odd quid. They're probably the least popular of any of the mk4 ibiza's so there must be a reason for that.

I have the 2.0 8v and i love it.

I previously had the 1.4 16v and the difference in performance is really noticeable, the 2.0 being much, much quicker.

As for saying its slow, is 0.7 secs really that bad for a 0-60 time with a 1.8t FR doing 9.1 and the 2.0 doing it in 9.8. Fair enough top end may be far apart with the 2.0 128 mph and the FR round about 130ish i believe.

As for people saying that it is a gas guzzler, i cannot agree with this. i can easily get 500 miles to a full tank, and that's driving it normally and also having many "spirited bursts"

Also on a recent drive from Glasgow to Inverness, i averaged 52.5 mpg! The route involved 30% motorways and 70% B roads:)

That's just my view on it, i think you have to own one to give a true opinion on it:)

2.0 8v is a damn good allrounder! You'll get the Climate and fuel computer etc with all the sports toys, without having to pay for a diesel engine and the silly diesel fuel prices.

Round town to be fair its no worse on fuel than a 1.4 petrol to be honest if i were comparing my 2.0 8v and my 1.4!

With them being disliked you can pick them up cheap and if you put a 1.4 16v and 2.0 8v in a slightly increased incline drag race the 2.0 would mince it!

Also the one in the mk4 is just my GTi's engine with a cross flow head which means parts are cheap and they are simple to work on, however nothing ever majorly goes wrong with the engine itself in my experience.

If the price is right get it!

The FR 1.8T does 0-60 in 8.1 seconds book figure? Not that this has anything to do with anything ;)

The FR 1.8T also does 1mpg less than yours book figure, I know which one id go for. But if cost is a issue the 1.4 Sport does 0-60 in just a second less than the 2.0?

My mistake was thinking of the 1.9tdi:)

I stand corrected for it:p

The FR 1.8T is 35mpg and the 2.0 8v is 36mpg, so yes i do know which one i would go for;)

1.4 - 100ps, 42mpg, tax band D 161g/km
2.0 - 113ps, 36mpg, tax band F 187g/km
1.8T - 150ps, 35mpg, tax band F 187g/km

2.0 8v = Old + heavy inefficient engine, but does have a little more power and torque than the 1.4

There were a few on here, they asked about tuning and got laughed at and told to buy PD130s. Some did! It replaced the 1.4 16v 100hp Sport, which was about the same speed! They saw sense, dropped it and re-released the 100hp 1.4 a few years later.

Loving your MK5 by the way, I hope to be on UK-MKVs next year :) Oh and don't scrap the GT, stick it on Club Polo for £100 and someone will probably pay for it!

Telford ay it...
The 8v is a great motor in the mk2 ibiza, really nice to drive and has plenty of pulling power lower down the revs, pretty decent on fuel on the motorway too. Mk4 that much heavier than a mk2?

I was probably one of the ones laughing! How times change.

I can see the point of the 16v 1.4 in the Arosa but the Beezer is just too bulky in mk4 form. I may be wrong but I can't be arsed to find out.

The mk5 is a cracking car. I would like to run just the one car and save myself a packet of money but the sort of use my little runabout gets the GTI would soon be wrecked and thus any savings be negated. These things are dropping in value enough as it is!

Scrappy offered me £90 for the Polo, mind you it has a good interior and a MOMO steering wheel. Trouble is the paint is fecked, no lacquer left on the upper facing panels. The old girl has a hard life and I've only washed her about three times all year.

That's more like it. Thanks. That's the sort of info I need.:)

I've had mine for 4 years and it has been a great car. I do a 60 mile round trip and get 340 out of a tank so not really a gas guzzler. You get climate control, adjustable and heated mirrors, sports seats etc. Well equipped and well engineered. Just don't try and tune them because it's not worth doing for the expense that you will lay out.

And the emissions on mine are 183g so I think that will increase the tax to £220 next year (I think)

For an 03 plate you're looking no more than 4k for a low mileage minter I would think.

It didn't replace the 1.4. It was offered against the 1.9tdi 130 Sport until SEAT pulled their finger out and managed to squeeze the 1.8t in.

I don't think I'd pay £4k for one, you can get a 1.8t for £5k. However a 1.8t would be wasted on the use it'd get and I have a 2.0t for 'proper' use anyways. Just such a shame all the mk2 2.0s around are sheds. The mk4 2.0 I was offered was nearer to £2k but it's not pretty, had a bit of a hard life I think.

Going round in circles now though - I've seen all the local Ford dealers clearing out their poverty spec nearly new Ka's for between 4 and 5 grand which would make far more sense for the use I have and certainly makes the Arosas I've seen for around £3k look poor value for money. Maybe I'll just have to fix my old Polo up again after all. Anybody know of one in a breakers as I need a bonnet hinge of all things!!!
