Doidge0, I drive a 1.9 tdi AHU Ibiza and all I have done is remove the vacuum line thats connected to the top of the EGR unit. Don't think there is any need to install a blanking plate.
Thanks for the help I found something to block the line nicely but will it be ok to leave the stem on the EGR valve uncovered, also does removeing the line stop all of the gas recerculating or does it let a little past.
The EGR unit works by having the valve being sucked open; so by removing the vacuum line, the valve should not open (unless its stuck open - worth a check).
Its fine leaving the stem uncovered. As long as you have bunged up the vacuum line.
Be interested to hear how you get on with this one. My 2.0 BKD engine didn't even like the restrictor plate that had a 4mm hole and threw a CEL!
Hope this works for you, I really don't like the egr, cakes the inlet up with soot something rotten.
Well I disconnected it and so far so good thanks for all the help.
So im planning to make a oil catch can Im thinking of bunging up the breather pipe on the inlet, and i have a half L aluminium bottle and put a small tap on the bottom filling the bottle with that cleaning wire wool type stuff putting a bit of pipe halfway down the bottle to connect the breather pipe to and for the top filter insted of buying one of those K+N type small filters do you think it would be ok to sandwich a peice of cotton between 2 peices of aluminium mesh the same size and attach it to the top of the bottle ?
Some of you say that the inlet can get coked up from the EGR valve is there anything that can clean this without dismantling it, On petrol cars I used to remove the maf and spray throttle body cleaner when the engine was running and it realy made a big diffrence, Iv seen similar things you can supposadly use on diesels like that 10K boost stuff from halfords and this carbon blaster http://www.dieselbob.co.uk/fueladditives.shtml but there both about £20.
Has anyone ever tryed using these or is it even safe to use it would it maybe damage the turbo or collect in the intercooler and cause hydrolic lock or even compress in the turbo and go bang lol.

Yes EGRs do suck, and I'd love to delete mine and also my manifold flap ( anti shudder valve) which seems to be at the root of the CEL issue. I checked and the valve motor fuse had blown. Cleared the codes and within 3 starts the code came back and the fuse had gone again! A straight piece of pipe without all this other nonsense would be a much better bet.
I'm envious of you 1.9 guys who've got rid of all this junk.
