When I bought my car I noticed it has a little bit of rust where the wheels meet the brake discs. Didn't bother me too much as I thought I could get it cleaned up.

Now I've had my car a couple weeks and noticed yesterday that the rust is spreading prety quickly. My front left disc is covered, and under slow braking makes a scraping noise.

What is going on? how can they be rusting suddenly so quick?

Is this covered by warranty>?

I remember a while back there were a few threads on this - (check the search) as far as i remember a few members with similar problems kicked up a fuss with SEAT but I dont remember the outcome..

DaveFR,

Yes thats correct mate, a lot of members myself included approached SEAT on this but they would not cover this problem under warranty :ban:

So, the outcome is that I and others took off the wheels, sanded the hubs down and painted them with silver hammerite. Ive done mine since last summer and they have lasted through the winter very well.

this is what i would suggest.
many cars hubs rust in this way!

Just popped out for a snack and checked the discs again, the rust on them has gone no doubt due to my journey to work this morning.

The hubs however are still very noticeable with 18" wheels.

Think I'll get them cleaned and painted along with the calipers. I'd love to do this myself but unfortunately don't really have the space to do it at home.

Will any old garage be able to do this? or would a wheel restoration specialist be required?

I had the same thing, but I noticed them when I collected my new car and I went absolutely ballistic !

They promised to fix it under warranty, and after a number of calls to SEAT from them and me, my local dealer (not the supplying dealer) fixed it under warranty.

You shouldn't accept it.

You may also void warranty by painting yourself...

Every single car I've owned has had the disc bell housings go rusty.

I'm not too bothered though, as it doesn't affect braking performance, it's just aesthetics.

However, I've just painted mine black along with the brake calipers & carriers. Looks mint! :)

The shiny metal area of the discs where the pads touch will always go rusty .... as soon as you brake the rust wears off, this is normal don't worry about it.

The area where the alloy wheels touch the car, which used to be silver/white, that does rust and looks poooooo! - if you want, take the wheels off, sand the rust off and paint it with hammerite or similar.

have tin of silver hammerite, brake disc cleaner in case of spillage and some heat resistant calliper paint just waiting for the weather to turn and job will be done
