Are all 1.6 Sports under performing?

Hi,

I am the proud owner of an Ibiza 1.6 DSG Sport. I love the car, but being honest the fuel economy is not at all good. It looks like the 1.4 turbo/supercharged engines are up to 8mpg more efficient (44.1mpg, What Car January 2010), and obviously have much better performance. If I drive my car on really quiet roads, as gently as I can I can achieve 41mpg. Driven normally (and I dont mean at all hard) it manages 37mpg. My overall average over 3000 miles is 36mpg. By comparison my Mk 4 VW Golf 2.3 V5, a far larger car with a 2.3 170hp engine used to average 27mpg over the same routes at the same driving times. My 2.8 V6 4Motion Golf (206hp) Used to average 31mpg.
It seems like the 1.6 engine is not at all efficient. From what people have said the figures I am achieving are about right for the car.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this? Its a bit odd when you but a small car with a relatively small engine, and it costs the same to run as a sports model Golf.

Our 1.6 Petrol managed about 37 ish at best on the daily commute driven by the wife - I made it go to 41 mpg at best on a long trip.

My 2.5 tdi V6 Audi A6 did 48 mpg yesterday on a 110 mile trip on mixed roads inc motorway.

I had hoped to get a 1.6 tdi next for better MPG - but would it ? :)

To be honest that MPG sounds about right for a Sport Petrol on general journeys around town, petrols are not made to be fuel efficient, if you want efficiency in fuel economy you should buy a diesel.

No doubt some people will not agree with me but I see that 1.6 sport petrol as being about right for economy wise.

True, But my journeys are on the open road, not town. Im just surprised a 2003 2.3 Golf was better!! And the 2.8 only just a little worse

Thats very good. I was hoping for mid 40's on mine. With my past new VAG cars I have found very little difference in MPG between when it was new and say 10k Miles. I guess smaller engines are a different story eh.

Thats good to be honest my 1.6TDI is only now 2months old, im getting on average around town about 42mpg, but on long runs its 50+mpg. I have done no way near 10k yet! I'm not saying its good or bad at the moment as its still not done enough miles yet to settle down. I am just quite happy with mine and considering my other half does alot of commuting in rush hour around town I think its doing pretty well.

I have noticed alot of people moaning about MPG on their Diesels & Petrols but its all about time. & Well petrols I wouldn't buy if good fuel economy was a must anyway.

I agree that diesels are for economy, but it seems some of the petrols are really bad for economy. Far worse than larger petrols with far more power

No complaints with the economy on my 1.6 petrol.

Its only done 6000 but will return an easy 45+mpg on a long gentle run. Even driven at around 75 on the motorway returns 40-42.

Around town it drops back to the low 30's but overall its as good as I had hoped:)

Na I dont drive it hard. The DSG changes gear at 1200 rpm in each gear. I call it granny mode.
