Well I've had diesels for last three cars - you need to adjust to how to drive them fast as they don't rev like petrols. Had a ZX 1.9D (non turbo which was suprisnigly fast. Follwed by modded ZX Volcane TD which was great, put many an expensive car to shame, but it blew a piston ring. Put in new engine but then Seat were bringing out new Leon at the time, so got a good deal on Mk1 Fr TDI. When i was fixing ZX borrowed Ford Steet KA (Convertible) but was costing me a fortune in fuel (Go kart handling tho and i miss having the top down - shame on me)

At the time of purchase Insurance and road tax on new FR TDI were both cheaper than 9 yr old ZX Volcane - hows that work out ? Obviously purchase cost needs to be factored in, but if you are looking to change car, then your gonna have to stump up anyway - just depends on budget. I intended to keep car for at least 5 years, which will be this spring.

Keeping a bit longer now (as other house projects + waiting for prices to fall on estate i got my eye on) so gonna do bigger mods this year, already got parts to go on for Stage two remap : SS big bore exhaust, air filter, 312 brake kit (need to paint calipers as they off Octavia VRS) upper S3 brace (lower fitted last service), so once i can get back in the garage and parts prepped and put on, engine will be remapped and car will have been perked up a bit :)

we may get more mile for a tank, but diesel is approx 3p-4p a litre more expensive
off set by tax being less
parts are same and obtainable from most vw/skoda/audi dealers and alo tps & eurocarparts.

as you know this site bleeds more money from you as well.....
Most places now Petrol is the same if not a little more than diesel, certainly round my way anyway,
i have a 150 fr+(cupra r styling) and used to have a cupra r and yes the R is fast and everything but unless you want to take it on the track i doubt very much you will see a major difference on the road espically a remapped 150,
i find i can afford to drive my FR+ faster more of the time than i used to the R simply because at 70-80mph its still doing 50+ mpg where as the R was doing mid Twenties.
Remap next for me!

im thinking though, to get my LC180 mapped at AMD and if im really impressed with how well the cars transformed ill keep it. Its just i like the look of the FR's with the Cupra R bumpers and interiors. And the fact that they can suprise petrols despite being a sooty diesel!!!!!!!

We shall see. Either way i think Seat developed some really good allround cars (the LCR, LC and Leon FR Cupra tdi etc) All very good cars and best value for money in my eyes. Ive not come across any other cars that can beat them value wise! And i noticed a big difference in build quality between my LC and my old 106 gti. Bare in mind the LC has alot more luxuries :p

I've also got a 150 FR+, so basically a Cupra R lookalike. Having come from much faster cars it took a bit of getting used to driving the derv but once you get to grips with the power band its alot of fun.

I don't drive particularly slow, and only do 20 odd mile journeys on average so I'm not getting the best MPG ever, but I still average 45 over a full tank, 50+ if I do more than 250 miles of motorway driving.

I used to get around 24 mpg average on my old modified Glanza V, that was only run on V power too... so the cost benefits for me are already apparent!

Remap wise, I imagine a remapped PD150 would be faster than a stock cupra in real world driving situations, especially 30-70 etc

The only disadvantage about the LCR and FR+ is that front bumper... yes it looks great but is a night mare on hills, kerbs and especially in multi storey car parks as it constantly catches when going to the next level. However that splitter is cheap and easy to replace...

Even worse on the FR+ as its 17" wheels make it that little bit lower than the LCR, get alot of "it really is a tractor with that plough on the front" from the girlfriend lol

as a previous owner of a cupra tdi 150 which i recently sold (as it wouldnt get up our drive) and a regular driver of othe cupra 20vts they are both great motors but as an all rounder the tdi has the edge, especially when you tinker with it. If you buy one you need only do a couple of mods to get decent power: a custom remap - not generic (once the other mods are done), allard intake pipe kit (including the egr remove), decat exhaust, decent air filter/box setup and remove the crankcase oil recirculation pipe (to a catch tank) then you'll have a 200bhp fuel efficient mid-range bruiser :)

hi MJ, thats nice to know mate! :) Was your diesel as reliable as the petrol? Because i sort of drive with a kind of heavy foot at times and so far my LC has been great. Upgraded the dogbone mount but thats about it as far as things breaking.

Also what sort of price am i looking at for an FR+ tdi with the Cupra R looks etc? Anything to look out for if i do start looking for one?

cheers for your help all :D

Reliable as hell, even with 108k on the clock and the pd engine loved a good thrashing every now and again :D

700 miles from a brimmed tank in an FR is very very optimistic, in all the 4 years i have had mine the best i have ever got was 530 and i don't hoon it that much

also the only other options i may be interested is the new shape A3 or 02 style A4 with the 1.9 or 2.0tdi. Anyone know much about these?

well i guess i might have to start letting others know what im planning to do now i think, ill have to put my Cupra 20vt up for p/x with a leon cupra tdi or FR. Know anyone?

this is where the PD comes into its own, and like you said you just need to know how to drive them. i've found the PD to be more free reving than some petrols!!

mines fairly quick (friends say its stupidly quick), had it not been for mileage i'd gone for the petrol...

also V Power Diesel aint cheap!

start off with service history and that the oils been the correct grade PD specific

plenty of quick diesels about on here to inspire , depends on how much you want to spend on one / modding one will depend on your outcome really

can also look out for modded ones too , saves a bit of cash and the mods are already done ,

look in the readers rides for ideas on what people do ,

and for gods sake yous the search functions before asking the easy questions of ' whats the best airfilter etc - youl only get shot down

 cheers Andrew, i use the search all the time to be honest, only ask questions if i cant find much on a subject. But i know what you mean. Well, ive decided i need to start saving asap to get a diesel as they are worth more than what my Cupra will be. By the looks of it they also hold their value more too.

How common are they to have leather and sat nav? As id love one with those extras. But it wouldnt have to have them, just saying.

also, just a quick question, whats the most people have seen from a pd150 engine? ive seen MJ's was around the 200hp mark? Can you get more? lol But then it all comes down to this mpg thing dont it, Your modding to get more but reducing the mpg at the same time.

Ive heard a mapped pd150 would smoke my stock LC180. And ive seen other posts on the forum claiming once both are mapped and modded, their tdi was a car length or so quicker???
