What Fuel For Cupra

Hello,

I've read a few post on here that says the Cupra is suppose to have Super Unleaded i.e 98 or 99 Ron, but i've looked in the manual and it says look on the filler. i've looked on the filler but it just says Min 95 Ron and then loads stuff in Spanish!

I just wondered if anyone had tested both out on a RR to see if there were any noticeable gains or not?

An FSI engine should run on Super Unleaded, they really need the high octane fuel for a complete burn as it's direct injection.

However, last Thursday I filled up with Super. Since then I've done a trip to Manchester and back, and I've just come back from a run in the welsh hills. I noticed no real difference in performance or economy.

Just personal experience mind you. Different driving styles and jouneys may highlight some difference.

It will take more than one tank for the engine ecu to readapt to the higher octane. And it's not all to do with performance, direct injection petrols need super to work properly.

All the petrol cars I've driven over a period have benefitted from using super unleaded fuel as opposed to normal 95 ron, both in terms of performance and economy.

Although, none of these have been a new Ibiza I'm afraid!

Super is defo worth it as it also protects the engine and keeps it cleaner - interneally - and yes you will eventually start noticing improvement in consumption. I am amazed that after about 1500 miles on mine with some mixed driving round city and open road I will be doing 'bout 400 miles on a tank!!!!! I could barely manage 270 in my mk3 cupra hahahahahahhahahahaha!!!!

Yup vpower here as well. Mine made 195bhp (see link in my sig) I really am impressed with the consumption now it's bed in. I'll have done 420 miles on this tank and that was with some blasts!

I always use Unleaded with 100 octane. Its around 7-8 euros more expensive for 45 liters.
But it treats the engine and injection system alot better, it reduces consuption(not to the extend that will make up for the cheap 95octane) and also increases performance. Roughly (the numbers are estimates and not accurate for all cars) a car with 95oct fuel produces around 185bhp while a 100oct would produce around 192-195bhp.
It all boils down if you are willing to pay a few $$$$ more to treat your car better.
As techie correctly said you will need around 3-4 full refils before the ECU fully adapts with your new fuel type.
For the more advanced you could always do some loggings if you have a VAG com cable and software and notice the CF values and see how you car is liking the fuel you use.

Would you drink White lightning cos its cheap or prefer to have a decent Stella LOL

Well it's up to you. Wouldn't really worry too much. I'd wager that you don't get the extra expense back in mpg.

Must say though I'm very happy with the figures my
car is returning on the commute 40miles @45mpg mostly 70mph on motorway

40mpg from Manchester to Cardiff on the welsh border mixed driving with overtakes and a blast with a scooby. Can't complain at that really. That's with vpower.

i just did a 500 mile trip north wales to Edinburgh and back but only got 29.6 was doing between 80 and 90 for most of it does that sound about right? took 2 full tanks yellow light was on when i got back or would i get better using a bit of vpower?

Yeah that's about right, your not driving it in the eco zone. 50-70 is best as said 45mpg at 70mph feathering the accelerator using declines properly etc.

When I'm having fun or don't care about mpg I can get some stupiy low figures. Driving on lanes and giving it some fair stick but settlling at a crusing speed of 60mpg I'll get 30-35mpg.

If your just driving for pleasure don't keep note of mpg, if on a journey to get somewhere is the extra 10/20mph really worth the extra cost and possible points for the time you save? That's the way I look at it

it will not work out cheaper than 95ron, but instead of being 7-8euro difference it will drop to 5 euro lets say.
Regarding performance, the car will have a few more km/h top speed and generally the car will be a little bit more aggresive.
I do it for all above reasons and cos i tend to push the car on a daily basis.

Having never run the car on 95 I couldn't tell you the difference. All I know is I'm generally hally with my mpg figures and the car feels spot on!
