everything is better about the TDI, power/torque/economy and cheaper tax/insurance.

however i hate dervs (Just because of the noise/gear changes) and had the same choice when I was 17 and went for a 1.6 16v! depends on whether you're doing long distance or town driving?

if its a run around, go for the petrol, if ur going to be doing motorway driving etc, I would go for a TDI.

I would say consider the sort of driving you do amd what sort of driver you are. I have the 1.6 16v and it is my first car, bought 2 weeks after I passed my test at 22. I love the car, but the one thing I would say is that I wish I had a more powerful engine. Most of my driving is around town so its not really an issue, but once I get onto dual carriageways and motorways the engine has to work quite hard. Also, one I hit ~80-85mph the engine drone gets annoying although that does serve as a good warning not to go to much faster as I cannot afford point on my licence!

As for fuel economy I get around 33 around town, much better on the dual carriageways and motorways ~40mpg last time I calculated.

Why not see if you can find an example of both and take a test drive, see what you think?

RJP testdrive the 2 if you have the chance and then decide for yourself because every diesel lover will tell you to buy diesel and the petrol lovers will tell you to buy petrol.

RJP in my small opinion you should buy DIESEL:whistle:

go for the tdi. only petrol leon worth buying is the 225 lcr imo

Why on earth would you buy a 90 horsepower TDi over a 105 horsepower 1.6? :D

I agree that the 110hp diesel is the best, but a decent one will cost £3250.

Because the 90 bhp TDi is very similar to the 105 bhp 1.6 and with a soft remap it will be a lot better

itfben to me theres no sound like the diesel sound but thats me.
the mk5 golf to me it´s a dead car with no power inspite of it´s 105 bhp my leon 1.9 tdi with 90 bhp with 17 inch rims is faster and more nervous than the mk5 golf with 16 inch rims, both engines are stock

I agree, the note my 110 gives off when you boot it in second is just awesome!

im a lover of the petrol engine , and high reving inductions etc ,
when i wanted the leon i was considering the LC /LCR but on average 2-250 miles out of a tank (i have a heavy foot too so prob would be less )

i then heard wind of the cupra TDI's

£120 a year tax , around £300 cheaper on insurance and average tanks last 4-600 miles ,

i then chose that option , its running decent power now , and am thinking to myself what to get next .,.,,.

can i actualy return from the dark side ,.,.,.,.

the newer diesels dont sound half as bad as what they used too , i cant even hear the engine noise upon driving , unless im booting it , and that would be down to a decat full system and a carbonio induction kit

there will always be the petrol Vs Diesels

as said go out and test drive the pair

im on autotrader now and theres a few ones in your range

as with all cars , make sure they are services regular ,using the correct grade oils etc
and should be fine

i know its a W reg and a little over your price but 66k on clock

155 lb/ft vs 109 lb/ft

A 0-60 of 12.7 as opposed to 10.9 says otherwise!

From a standing start maybe, but this would assume no other passengers too, which from my student days never happened. Depends on his driving, I spend all my time on motorways which a diesel's perfect for!

id take a 90bhp derv over a 1.6 petrol version anyday. the petrol might be quicker off the mark but if your going to be racing like that feck off and buy a civic lol. the diesel will pull a lot beter once its moving and will make overtaking so easy esp if you have 2 or 3 in the car with you. plus them older diesels are bullet proff except for maybe a dmf or the odd turbo problem. i know guys with 99 - 01 golfs/boras/octavias with over 150,000 miles and still going well.

Badging, for the older 1.9 engines

TDI 90
TDI 110
TDI 130
TDI 150

130 and 150 are PD engines.

Only the badge on the back is coded, where there are badges in the grill the colour is not significant.

I'm biased, owning a TDI 110, but I think that they are more driveable for the 95% of the time you will spend off full throttle. Around town the low-rev pull is very welcome, means you always have an option to go forward or back when manouevering for position. Overtaking most things is easier too. The power band is narrower than most petrol cars, 2K-4K, but you get used to using the gears to keep the engine in the right rev range.

Diesels are longer-lived, too, being more heavily engineered to cope with the high compression ratio, and not high-revving.

It'll never scream like a sports car, or win a drag race (but it will surprise a lot ob people at the traffic lights grand prix). It will deliver pleasent easy driving in most situations.

There's a Toledo TDI (Y reg) taxi running about Preston with nearly 400k on the clock, and it's still as sweet as a nut.
I'd like to see a petrol engine get to that sort of mileage

I'm not like you guys...
I had a 110 SE staright out of the box fun, can make you smile with a decent remap aswell :)
i do a 200mile a week commute, motorway for a couple of miles, then traffic, and it was costing me £15-20 a week, and i didnt hang around.

I miss my leon :(

Best I could find for a petrol :D

Why on earth he thinks he can get £200 for that is beyond me!

The question is though, unless you're a taxi, who wants to be driving a ancient car with 150,000 miles on it? I'm hoping to be driving a Mk2 before mine reaches that milestone.

Have you driven one though? I suspect the 90hp will be a somewhat different experience than your kick-ass 150hp derv.

I own a 90bhp leon and i have driven a vw beetle 1.6 16v 105 bhp the same engine as the leon and more or less the same weith.
The beetle with 16 inch steel rim and my leon with 17 inch alloy rims (the fr + rims) and the beetle isn´t that faster on the launch and after that the tdi engine torque gets the advantage, and the sound of a diesel engine my god its amazing
