Hi everyone, this is the first time i have posted anything on the forum so be gentle with me! I have never really had a reason to ask a question/advise because everything you ever wanted to know can be found on here somewhere, but at last i have a question, and its a big bit of advise that i need please!
I run a 2005 leon FR tdi 150 remapped to about 195ish bhp. All has been well since the remap last year, but whilst out this morning i was accelerating of a roundabout onto a dual carrageway, gave it some welly upto about 4k rpm and power dies and big big smoke from the exhaust! Managed to pull into a layby and switch the engine off. Dare not start it up again(just in case), and called garage to tow me in. Back at the garage they checked the oil and there was none! Yet i checked the oil only days ago and it was fine. They started it up and it puts out plenty of white smoke which smells weird!
Any ideas anyone? Blown turbo? I thought the turbos on vag cars were fairly reliable!

HELP!!! Sean.

sounds like turbo seals have gone, are your intercooler pipes full of oil? i had similair symptons when had a large boost leak but would have no effect on the oil level.

Hi, yes it does sound like oil seals cos there is no bad noises from the turbo, just white smoke from exhaust, but i guess if it is oil seals in the turbo then it would suck oil through and out the exhaust maybe! Intercooler pipework not looked at yet but i noticed a while ago when i fitted a boost gauge that there was a little oil in them and thought it was normal! Perhaps it was a sign of what was to come?

Just contacted turbo dynamics and they say they do not repair the turbo's on the 150pd cars, so it looks like a new turbo is required, that's gonna hurt my wallet!!!

Defo sounds like turbo, no oil means its been sucked out and more than likely out of the exhaust

It will be turbo failure, trust. If a boost hose pops off you will just fill the road with black smoke

Thats what happened on the road when it occured, then back at the garage they checked the oil level and there was none! Started engine, just light grey smoke which smelt funny but no odd noises from engine, ran sweet as a nut, weird!

When it happened there was loss of power and loads of black/grey smoke billowing from exhaust. Back aty the garage when they started it up it was more a white smelly smoke!

Check all the intercooler pipes first, if they are all fine, then turbo it is

Yes it is the turbo, well done! Just been down to see the guys at the garage and the impeller is wobbling all over the place, they suspect the shaft may be broken. Hopefully no damage to the engine has been done. Fingers crossed on that one!!!

Yes i know that feeling! Joking aside i was thinking of getting a hybrid turbo cos i thought they had better internals? Maybe avoiding future failure.
Maybe that trackday last week finished my stock turbo! Turned out to be an expensive day, as i also mullered a set or redstuff pads aswell!!

Ho hum!
