Starting from cold - sounds like a battery or starter motor problem. Get these replaced.well a little update , not so well in wales , Snow keeps coming ,
issues i currently have :
starting from cold or stood still for few days
hot starting
idle speed needs uping - engine cuts out if i brake sharply , revs drop below minimum
smokes really bad when cold - a blue smoke
all seats have gone boney , can feel metal thru them
also on tick over , if you blip throttle slightly you can hear what sounds like a piston slap / knock
umm cant think what else off top my head
well i made a very short video of the smoking

Engine cutting when braking - are you pressing the throttle down at same time when your braking hard?
Blue smoke - deisels can do this when its quite cold. Good quality deisel can reduce this. What fuel are you using? Have you ever done logs on the car to check timing?
Seats - Can get these real cheap now mate. Just buy new ones.
knock - open botton, get mrs to rev engine a bit and see if anything it tapping, rubbing?
Your timing could be out - best to check with vagcom. Will get battery tested , would it be the timing being out ?
Sounds like a glow plug or timing related issue. If its bad ever since the mental weather then possibly glowplug is my feeling.as for engine cutting out, not touchiing brakes and throttle , just braking in traffic ,
markwales tried altering the idle speed , but for somereason its reverted back to being worse than standard now , not sure what went wrong , but just ticks over just above 500rpm mostly , so when u brake the revs dip , and anything below 500rpm engine cuts
my uncle suggested something being dragged back through somewhere , not sure if he meant the fuel or the oil somewhere , ,, and being recycled back through (to explain the smoking )

When was your cambelt done last? Did you check timing afterwards?
Could be seals or the engine drinking oil. When was your oil last changed and last service? Could be too much oil in there...Like I said when weather is this cold someones they do puff a little blue.
