I did think as I typed that it sounds irresponsible but in reality it's people using summer tyres at low temp that are the danger, I am a total convert !

I watched a X5 Chelsea Tractor skid around in the local Sainsbury Car park and hit a parked car, £50K of useless 4x4 as it was shod in pimp alloys with the wrong rubber !

I travel a lot and most of the continent uses winter tyre, it's embarrassing to watch UK news overseas and have people around you say 2" of snow, so why is the UK closed ?

Success!!! Found some. Gave up on the expensive part worn ones on ebay and bought some Yokohama ones. Hopefully they are as good as everyone says. If they get here, I'll let you know!!

They also had another set of Yokos and a set of Avon winter tyres in the right size for LCR's, if anyone is interested. They are Adams and Page in High Wycombe, phone number is 01494 525971.

Paid £155 plus vat each for them. Still less than my excess!!

And not listening if they are found cheaper elsewhere now :banghead2

I never had a winter WITHOUT winter tyres on.
below of an average of 7 degrees celsius you really should consider putting your winter sets on. they will not be that hard at low tems = more grip over the summer tyres.
a recent police statistoc showed that this weekend in Hungary ~30% of the accidents caused by not having winter tyres (leader is still speeding, and drinking)

I got 4 part worn dunlop winters for £240 fitted.I checked the inflated new price and they were listed at £246 each on blackcirlces.Thats off ebay at a place in Alfreton (Derbyshire)called online performance I think.

I had a set on my old A4 a few years ago, I MUST buy a set of winters again, we don't really get snow down here in the South East very often, but we have this year. They really are amazing if no-one has tried them out. I will be looking for some crap steel or alloy 16" wheels to fit some to. I bought a set of Nankang something or other for £160 from mytyres.co.uk when I got them in 2005. People called me eccentric and anal, until I had to go out on the worst snowy day we had and I was one of the only cars able to get up our motorway at over 30 mph.

Ta for heads up. :)

Alas, Adams and Page are currently sold out of LCR-size winters', but might have some more on Tues.

Meanwhile, National Tyres in Warminster can get hold of 225/40/18 Avon Ice Touring STs. Tel: 01985 212309.

And thanks to dalegolf215 for his impartial advice - cheers, mate.

Any thoughts on snow chains as where i live there are huge hills to climb and the snow at the moment is up to 14inches deep. Not been out in the car for 5 days now.

14" deep

I am having problems with the car bottoming out on the lumps in the middle of the road. Think I'm doing the snow ploughs job for them.

Chains are good for the heavy stuff but with that much does a Cupra really have enough ground clearance. I haven't had many problems but just try and keep it moving if I go on the heavy stuff. Most of the 4x4s have been down the lanes anyway and cut it up a bit.

Forgot to mention - when I phoned BlackCircles the fella said they had Dunlop 225/40/R18s in stock, but they cost approx £230 each. :-o

However, IIRC, they are the type that won the 2010 Auto Bild [German car mag] Winter Tyre Test. ;)

OK, fitted the Yoko winter tyres and just come back from work.

Got to say, best things ever. Drove on 3-4 old snow, slushy stuff, wet and icy. They feel a bit vague, so will be coming off as soon as possible, but its more like driving in the wet than on snow. Still slippery on snow, funnily enough, but not to the point of TC on all the time and not moving.

On snow with newish summer tyres, from a standstill with no revs and dropping the clutch caused the front wheels to spin and no movement. With the winter tyres on engine stalls.

On slushy roads, full acceleration in 2nd is not a problem. I lifted before the TC came on/wheels spin.

Final test was getting over the 8" of snow/slush/salt/ice at the edge of the road, up the pavement and onto the drive. No problems, whereas it took 4 attempts and far too much of a run up to be comfortable!!

Highly recomended if you havent got them and still running the OE size summer tyres.
