Swapping from an FR TFSI to an Ecomotive SE with all the toys was the best £5k I've spent in a long time. I do around 30k miles per year and I'll have recouped the money in about 18 months from the time of swapping (or even less time if the fuel+insurance prices keep spiralling). At that point, I'll have a younger car with better interior/gadgets, more warranty left on it and I'll *still* be saving money on my bills into the future.

Obviously if you do less annual mileage or aren't prepared to sacrifice as much power for economy, then you should definitely do a quick spreadsheet to work out if it's worth it... but the threshold for it being worthwhile is coming down all the time as the running costs head into the stratosphere.
Politics/tax policy aside, fuel costs are inevitably going to increase very quickly anyway due to us running out of oil coinciding with increased demand from developing economies.

The good news is that once the baby arrives, cars will seem much less important than they once did. :)

Before my FR TDI I had an E46 330d sport which was great, the only trouble I had was when it started playing up it was quite expensive to fix and I ended up going from problem to problem with it (bit of a donkey car I think) so I decided to cut my losses and get rid of it and replace it with the Leon.

Even now I still think I have taken a massive step backwards considering the BMW had every extra on it whereas the Leon has next to nothing in the way of luxury.

That aside though I do feel the Leon is more fun and nimbler than the BMW and the difference in MPG between the 2 was hardly any.

I do miss the BMW though :(

just went from a petrol performance car to a derv FR 170 and its just not doing it for me. 3 months and i want a petrol varient again. Dont get me wrong the car goes well with plenty of torque but it doesnt sound like a performance car should(not that 170bhp is mind blowing quick lol)
My advice would be if you do under 10k a year stick with the petrol and enjoy.

drove to work this morning about 15 miles and got 32mpg, boring though but if it lets me keep the cupra then its all good. Tonights the decider when i find out the settlement price on finance. Hmmmmm

I've just changed from a stage2 Astra VXR to a TDI FR due to the high running costs of the Astra.

Would get low 20's mpg in the Astra, now I get between 44-49 mpg in my Leon. Happy Days.

Keep it, the good weather will be here before you know it and you'll be able to get the power down for a blast then you'll be glad you kept it.

Why not get an eco remap? I've had to take my map off, to save my clutch a little. Been thinking of selling my Bluefin (Controller, with map installed). and getting REVO, then having the 3 map module so I can have an ECO, normal, power maps.

im going the other way trading in my 57 plate fr tdi for a 59 plate cupra.I liked the diesel but i want the extra power again and i dont do many miles.:funk:

I went from a Celica GT4 tuned to over 300bhp to an Audi A4 tdi Sport 130. Even after a map to about 170 bhp it still bored me. I ended up coming back to petrol & even though fuel costs more its worth it.
Al also had a very good point about depreciation too.
If it was me I would keep the cupra & try to ease off the fun pedal on day to day driving & every now & again really enjoy it.

I know where you are coming from mate. I go through £60 a week on fuel in my car and the wife £30 a week p$sses me off but what can you do?
I tried my car with the pflow off and only lasted a day.
Now I just enjoy what I have and worry about it on fill up day.
The price of fuel just takes the p$ss it ain't the cars fault, plus the road tax at £235 the goverment want us all to run around in small shitters. DON'T LET THEM WIN
