Ive noticed a problem with one of my strut tops today, ive recently fitted coilovers and have noticed when turning the steering with the bonnet up only one side of the strut tops is turning freely, the other side doesnt move atall when steering is applied?

Should they rotate in situe when turning the wheel?

Or is something wrong

I believe so, the bearing inside the top mount should turn more easily than the strut. If the strut is having to turn it suggests the bearing isn't doing it's job properly.

Neither of mine turn. Put new coilovers and top mount kit about 6 month ago. Sometimes while turning (not moving ) there is a groaning from the front. Also plate at top of susp strut inside bay has about a 10mm gap from top of strut.

The gap is fine, it does just depend on the age of the rubber mounts but having a gap is no indication that the top mounts are worn.

auq, did you replace the top mounts when you did the coilovers?
