Handbrake MOT Fail

Hey

Mrs Ibiza has just failed its MOT on handbrake.

Near side is fine, but Off side is reading 0 force when handbrake applied.

How does the calliper assembly work on these?

Could the cable have come out of the housing somehow?

its adjusted correctly under the rear cup holder.

had a look tonight

the arm on the caliper moves and returns correctly, but does nothing to the piston wihtin the caliper.

hence it does nothing when its applied.

are these servicable?

To the OP, have you ever tried cleaning up the rear brakes, and re-zeroing the pistons on both sides, this might sort things out. Maybe look on the Skoda forum for what to do. At only four year sold its a bit soon to cough up for a new calliper.

This is an interesting thread to me as my mechanic recently said that my driverside rear caliper wasn't working so great - the piston wasn't returning as well as it should and that it was sticking a bit. No warning on my MOT or anything but he was giving me a heads up.

I wonder if the calipers can be overhauled? and if Seat do an overhaul kit? I was a bit reluctant to buy a 2nd hand caliper as it may be doing the same thing.

Recently reburbed the 2 rear calipers on my mates MK1 Fabia. Stripped and checked for excessive wear / pitting in the cylinder and on the piston surface, shot-blasted, painted and new seal kits (from the dealer) fitted, new bleed nipples. They now work a treat. No more binding :D so.... yes they can be refurbed.

Cheers for your reply Bondi, that's good to hear it can be done. I might just pop into my Seat dealers tomoz and order a couple of seal kits :) TBH sounds like a common issue eh.

Don't suppose you have the part number handy for the seal kits? How much work was involved? I'm possibly going to have to do the same to the rear calipers on my Fabia too.

Dont have part numbers to hand, but just drop Dave at Sere Motors an e-mail, he'll be able to give you prices aswell. I could get you part No's this evening.

I think the seal kits come in pairs BTW, I ordered 2 as I thought they were single sided, but ended up with 2 sets. The second set I'm keeping for when I refurb the rear calipers on my Cupra TDI as the calipers are the same.

ah right. thats how my mk2 golf was so i just thought it was how they were.

What, small drums inside discs being good, well maybe they never need any attention, but when they do it costs a fortune (had them on a Cav 2000GSI 4X4). Give me rear disc brakes any day over rear drum brakes - but I understand that not what the discussion was about - just me making my preferance clear!
