I have been away from this forum since I sold my Leon Cupra Tdi approx two years ago, biggest mistake I ever made, but thats another story.

Anyway to get to the point I am currently looking at getting a late model mk1 Leon FR around 2005 and I was wondering if I should go for the diesel or the petrol 225?

Insurance for either is pretty much the same so not an issue. Road tax however for the year is double for the petrol.

I only do about 7000miles a year so I don't know if I would save any money in the long run buying a diesel. If I did buy the diesel would I have any issues doing a short journey of 9 miles to work and back every day?

I am looking to spend in the region of 6 grand so hopefully can get something decent. I can't stand the interior of the mk2.

Any help would be gratefuly received.

Thanks.

Diesel for the reliability and mpg, petrol for the sound and extra performance.

In your case sounds like the petrol will be more suitable

If you've had the diesel already, why not try the petrol (and the extra 75hp!)

Worst case scenario is that you sell it in 12 months if its too expensive.

not worth buying diesel if your only doing 7k a year, you'll get a cheaper petrol car and enjoy the extra bhp more :)

Having had the diesel a couple of years ago perhaps I should Know give the petrol ago. Especially as I will not be doing the miles I used to be doing in the diesel.

As I am only doing approx 9 miles to work every day is there anything I need to be aware of as the car will only just be getting up to temp. Will I need to change the oil more often, that sort of thing.

I will prob be doing more miles at the weekend, running kids to football, parties etc so I can give it a good blast then.

I have noticed that alot of people on here recommend letting the car idle for a few minutes to cool the turbo down?

Glad to see that this is a very active forum not like the AUdi S4 one I was on for a while.

Big mistake buying the S4 after the Leon, cost an absolute fortune to run, only kept it for 4months and luckily sold it for what I paid for it :)

Looking to buy early December as I am out of the country till then, so if anyone is thinking of selling there late model mk1 FR for the right price I might be intersted. Ideally I want one that is standard but open to cars with a few mods and a good FSH, with lowish mileage.

Don't ask for much do I!

Thanks again for your input.

9 miles of road but is this town traffic or motorway traffic? either way the deisel will give you more mpg. i do approx 15 miles to work and back through traffic and a little bit of A road mileage and i have to fill up full tank every 2-3 weeks and thats taking it easy

with a diesel you can floor it and still get good mpg. a 150bhp deisel model has plenty of oomph and can be easily remapped to approx 170-180bhp if not more and will be rapid :D

I bought my fr 3 years ago and was doing about ten miles to work, was mostly country roads so I did 55mpg or so and now I live within walking distance and don't need the diesel. I'm looking to get rid at the end of the year/start of next and get a mk2 cupra k1, mostly cause I really want one and also cause I can clear some debt and I don't want to look back and regret not owning one

I will miss the Leon though, 190 bhp and 63mpg on long runs is fantastic and for a diesel I get comments on mine sounding good

I would say get the petrol, the only reason i got a diesel is because i was doing 70 miles a day to and from work. As quick and torque'y as the diesel is even with a straight through exhaust it just isnt as fun as a petrol, smaller rev range and no reel exhaust noise.

You can get some total bargin's right now on the lcr's so i think you'll have the pic of the bunch really with 6k to spend if your prepared to travel a bit.

A diesel would be cheaper to run over the year, even only doing 9 miles, but i know exactly what i would be buying if it was me and it has 225 in the title not tdi [B)]

Think I will prob go for the petrol, a quick look on Pistonheads/Autotrader throws up quite a few cars within my price range.

Diesels seem to be slightly more to buy andquite a few are higher mileage than the petrol equivalent.

I have always fancied the petrol version with decent seats, brembo brakes etc. The only reason I had the 150 diesel was because I was doing 140miles a day and before I was running a mk4 Golf v5 which drank the juice.
