guys, had my clutch replaced recently and now and again the car made a knocking noise but the garage couldnt locate the fault. then 2 weeks ago the clutch went, i only had it replaced in july so under warranty the garage agreed to replace it and today advised me that the crankshaft is buggered and this caused the noise. now i aint got a clue on how it all links together so i am hoping someone can inform me what my options are/cost involved in an idiots guide so to speak. crankshaft would connect to clutch and flywheel would have taught, probably cheaper to get bottom end, 250-400 then labour unless you doing it yourself

good picture for you :)

Crankshaft (red), pistons (gray) in their cylinders (blue), and flywheel (black)

Sounds like bullsh*t to me, you need to ask them exactly whats wrong with the crank shaft.
The flywheel bolts to the crank shaft using very fine threaded bolts (this is so a good amount of clamping force is applied to the flywheel) it is possible that they have crossed threaded the crank and just tried to force the screw in and broken / cracked the mating face.
Or maybe they didn't replace the bolts last time ( i think there once only bolts but not 100%) and one of the bolts has sheared in the crank and got loose in the flywheel.

I would have suspected maybe the DMF is goosed if it was knocking.

Go to the garage and get them to show you the damaged crank, they may be covering there tracks if they did something wrong.

The cranks on these cars don't just break - if it's goosed then it would point to somethings been done wrong when they originally fitted the clutch.

Good luck mate.

x2 and the fly wheel bolts should be replaced
get pics up for us

thanks for the replies guys. they will be taking the sump off tomorrow to assess the damage. apparantly there has been 'moevement' which has made grinding marks on the engine block...from what my dad has said. not sure how this could have happened? they have also said that the shims that sit under the crank are missing and this may have caused damage but i dont see how this would cause the scoring?

the DMF/clutch kit was recently fitted am I too am guessing that they have messed up somewhere.

you cant mess up main bearings fitting a clutch and fly wheel. if you had no main bearings you engine would be toast mate
there has been movement ? from what, in what ? the crank doesnt just float around willy nilly....
somethings not right here mate. big end bearings dont knock "now and again"
