Thinking of swapping a Leon FR for an Ibiza Cupra/Bocanegra

I have a re-mapped 2010 Leon FR TDI which has every extra in the book. Yeah its a nice car to drive on a long journey but for my daily commute across London its starting to hack me off.

Plus I am kinda bored with diesel despite getting excellent economy from it. The sound of a diesel engine doesn't exactly fill you with inspiration!

My local stealers have a 2011 Bocanegra which I am seriously considering swapping mine for. Any Cupra/Boca owners out there, what is a re-mapped Cupra like? I'd get it Revo'd straight away.

So my concerns are : interior quality seems better in the Leon with Media Centre and number of speakers etc. MOre importantly is it fun to drive and would you swap your Ibiza for a Leon if you could.

I went from a pre-FL Leon FR TDI to an Ibiza Cupra, yes the Cupra was fun to drive, especially in sport mode but I only ever managed 200 miles tops to a tank, it used oil of it's all quickly and never felt solid going over road imperfections.

Have a test drive and see what you think, I was won over by the DSG but as it's a dry box, you start to notice its clunkyness and knocking when dropping gears.

in the past i have had TDI's mapped up and yes they economical

but god my lil boc is fun i have stage one map and get good mpg and it runs on v power f

test drive one you will love it can have alot of fun in these cars people underestimate them

Not driven an FR Leon, but the courtesy one I had t'other week felt more solid, better built, better spec'd and more comfortable than my Ibiza.

Not a chance, the ibiza feels zippier, more feedback, and being smaller is a lot more chuckable... that said, I was comparing a run in Ibiza with a brand new Leon, plus if I was used to driving something a bit bigger and it was mine perhaps I'd feel happier giving the Leon some stick?

I would consider going from a Leon to an Ibiza a big downgrade in terms of spec and comfort. but if it's cheap thrills you're after then the Ibiza is probably as good as any.

Would defo reccomend one. I had derv since I was 18 and started getting hacked off with them. Test drove the cupra and my mind was well and truly made up. If you test drive one....... Be prepared to buy it haha

I find the dsg in my fr takes away a lot of involvement with the car. If you're after fun, get a manual gearbox! I had a mk1 Leon fr tdi before this and I found it more exciting to drive fast, just the lack of revs and sound that let it down. That said, the newer Ibiza is a much more complete car, but that's not always fun...

I'd swap my Ibiza for a Leon fr petrol.

If you want fun, get a clio 200....My 2p!

I've always preferred to drive manual cars as you ultimately have more control but my mate took me out in his Mk5 Cupra and I was dead impressed with the DSG box but without driving it myself makes it hard to gauge whats it like.

I got mine on Eibach springs and coilovers a few months ago and there is no bodyroll now and handling so much better but its not quick enough for me.

I don't mind derv in itself but I had mine on the rolling road and it came out at 212bhp but its just not fast enough anymore and I feel like a chipped Cupra might suppress that. Plus the derv engine just sounds crap. My biggest issue is the lack of kit the Ibiza comes with compared to mine which I paid £20k for just over a year ago. but cant really afford to run a Leon Cupra which would be my preferred choice.

I called up the dealers who I bought mine from who have an MY11 Boca with 5 miles on the clock and are going to look at the figures to see what it cost to chop mine in. I'm loathe to pay more monthly for an Ibiza but will have to see what they say.

It sounds to me that you don't really want an Ibiza, you just want the performance of the Ibiza Cupra. You also say you prefer a manual car, this all sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.
Why not sit tight with the car you have and do some saving. Then buy the car you really want to have, the Leon Cupra.

A remapped and other goodied cupra will roughly hit about 220bhp mark, but with a lot less torque and no manual gearbox.
On the plus side it'll be a bit lighter so probably be a bit quicker/feel more lively.
But I don't think it's what you're looking for tbh.

What kind of mileage are people getting with a Cupra/Boc if you take it easy? My Leon has just started creaking and its getting worse! I have a feeling its because of the stiffer suspension. I'm really not sure, I like the idea of the DSG box though and traffic is driving me mad. The thing is I have 430nm torque so you always struggle off the line! My mate who had a MK5 Cupra now has a Leon Pre FL K1 said he wouldnt get one again. He said the DSG box gets boring after a couple of months and then you want manual again! Thoughts anyone?

I like the turbo on the derv but if I could get more power out of it I wouldn't probably be moaning but I want something that throws you back and I dont get that with the TDI anymore.

TBH i love the DSG and would look for another. I am getting lazy and like, after a long shift to chill and let the car do it all...Mines creaks some but i just turn the music up!

The mpg in the cupra and Boc is good for what is does
Full tank for me is about 250 ish with mixed Driving

Tbh DSG is a bit hit and miss with people
Personally I love it coz it's quicker and so much more relaxing to drive
It was one of the main reasons why I bought the car

My overall average is around 34. this is mostly city driving, I drive to work, its about 2.5miles there back, car never really gets up to operating temp. 40mph road. Then out of work hours usually I hammer it around Average tank for me is between 300-320miles.

DSG box is brilliant in my eyes, never had an issue with it. You learn how it works and it learns how you drive.

I brimmed the tank on 99Ron(mines mapped so I always use this) and ive been driving with a very careful foot recording every journeys MPG according to the computer. When I brimmed it it said I had 320miles to empty, ive done 50 or so miles and the range comp has gone up to 335miles. This includes my cold, 7.00am starts. Last two days coming home there's been some crawling/idling so that gave me some lower figures but so far its ran as follows:

Its fxcking quick. Thats what it is, mapped it does throw you back in your seat. Mine's done 5.6s to 60mph with TC on and that was my second attempt, first attempt was a 6.0s with TC off right after it was mapped. Not done any more timed ones. Standard it was 6.4s (7.2?!, pah! VW marketing)

It has no problem at all reaching its claimed top speed either now. Gets there with easy just doesnt let up even up over 100mph

Ive came from two fiestas and they handle very well. I wasnt expecting much from this but I took it on a 170mile route with a mate in an FR the other weekend up over and through the yorkshire dales (Do love it up there! go all the time) and the roads are brilliant. I went into corners quickly and never had any "Oh sh1t" moments or even any real understeer unless provoked, the throttle was smooth and the power mid corner never unsettled the car as it comes in nice and smooth(on my map at least)

Yeah I loved the little blip you get on the downshift! It's amazing the little things that make you smile.

It impressed me the way the gear changes seemed seamless! Do you get complete control in manual shifting because some auto's i've driven change up for you even if you want it to.

250 miles out of a tank will do me. I'm getting about 400-450 in mine with mostly town driving at the moment. I'm guessing it costs about £65-70 to fill up?

Hi Jay,

Like the vid. As much as I like my Leon I do like the fun you can have in a Cupra/Boca.

I'm struggling to find one with Zenons but if I can't its no biggie.

It makes you wonder where VW get their figures from. It's claimed my Leon standard does 0-60 in 8.2 but there is no way it takes that long, i've not done a timed run in mine yet.

My mate that had one said his only issue was that the brakes fade quickly but then everyone has different driving styles anyway and some give brakes more abuse than others.

Out of interest mate, what have you got top end (pm me if you don't wanna make it public ;0)

Got 148 out of mine when VW claim 133 top speed WTF!!
