You'd be best not making comparisons. The Diesel will be slower and probably won't sound as nice (though that's subjective). Heavier engine up front might compromise the handling a bit too.

But if you need the fuel economy, and can get over the comparison with the petrol version, you'll probably be satisfied with it.

having made a pretty much similar switch (leon tfsi sport revo to standard altea fr 170) I didnt find it as hard as i thought it would be and if youre still not happy a remap would always help

Hmmm... So basically it's more sensible and a lot less fun :(
At least I won't get to drive it for a while anyway.

What's the diff between the cr and pd. I know there's tons of discussions but I never took notice via I have the TFSI :)

The PD suffers with injector and particulate filter problems, has a narrow power band and sounds a litle tractor like.

The CR has no reported injector or particulate problems, has a wider, smoother power band (that doesn't feel quite as grunty) and sounds a lot quieter.

The CR is fitted to the facelift cars from 2009 on so they look a little bit fresher too.

I've had both PD and CR 170's and can say that yes the PD did feel more grunty but it wasn't actually any faster. The power delivery is just different. PD delivers all power in one lump and the CR is more progresive.

The CR is better on fuel too (maybe 10MPG better)

Had the tfsi in the golf and now own a cr170 the switch was easier than I thought it would be, I actually prefer the diesel for everyday driving but yeah the power is definitely different but the drive is a lot smoother IMO and I see less petrol stations which is good :)

I went from CR170 to a FR TSi 211 and still prefer the TSi. Yesterday we had an FR CR140 as courtesy car. I have to admit unless I did the miles I would not want to go back to a derv. The lag was even more noticeable than on our previous CR170, the vibration though the steering wheel and gear lever was noticeable, more than I thought it would be. However once on the move the engine did smooth out with the obvious lack of power.

The TSi is actually easier to drive with a lighter clutch, lighter steering and more response, the big knock is the mpg which is some 9mpg lower than the CR170. Just glad we only do 6000 miles a year and in a month will have an VW Up! as well for my city commute and local journeys, so mpg will be even less of an issue.

Yeah the loss of power and overall derv feeling will be new to me. I've always avoided them like the plague.

But, at over 200 a month for fuel alone, I'm willing to take the hit and go derv.
The car is a beauty. White, btcc, carbon roof. Just needs a bit more work to make it mine :)

Next stop is definitely mods and I have NO clue about dervs.

I'll be selling my p-flo already:( only just got it!!

Anybody know if I can transfer my black front grill straight from my current TFSI 2007 to a 2011 btcc FR?

The btcc grill is the same as the pre facelift grill so should go straight on the fr?

You may be surprised. Sure, in a traffic light Grand Prix, it would come second, but on the open road, the torque more than makes up for it. The noise from my diesel is far less intrusive than the high-pitched whine of a high-revving petrol engine, and (IMHO) much more pleasant.

The CR engines are decent enough and a derv will never be as refined as a petrol especially the latest turbo lumps that give the slug of torque, that makes a derv so drivable. But if you do the miles it is a no brainier and won't be as bad as you think. It's only when you drive a decent petrol again that you will notice the differences.

Grills are changeable between a pre FL and FL fitted with a BTCC kit.

Excellent straight swap for me then. Nice.
Next need to
- Paint Calipers
- Wrap/spray mirrors
- get some proper bulbs in the front

Then, once my p-Flo is sold ... .... .......
I will buy the same but for the CR170

Then wait a while and go for Sedox or Bluefin remap with option to switch back for its required services.

I changed from the PD to the CR....love both of them :) although as commented earlier the PD did have slightly more grunt to start with.

One question though, forgive me for asking but this always puzzles me....why are you planning on remapping a car that you have never driven yet?... if you dont think it will be powerful enough then im sure there are other options on the market.
