i went from petrol to diesel. i do 12-15000 miles a year my commute is 15 mile all dual carriageway apart from 1/2 mile at the end.

you will like the less frequent visits to the fuel station, full tank lasts me minimum of 2 weeks. my current one is the pd, im getting tempted to go and test drive a f/l with the cr engine in it see what the difference is

Having driven plenty of the VAG engine range, going from the legendary 1.8T in the Golf MK4 & Ibiza Cupras (MK3 & MK4) along with a TFSI in the MK5 Golf GTI, I can say you will NOT be disappointed if you are going for the FL Leon (2009+) with the common rail diesel engine in.

I actually found the 1.8T and the 2.0TFSI in particular, to sound like a bag of spanners on startup anyway! In fact I often commented on how rubbish they sounded at idle - there was nothing wrong with the engines either, but the CR is VERY quiet for a diesel.

Trust me, I hated the idea of a diesel, especially, as I had a brief relationship with a 2007 Ibiza Cupra (160hp PD Diesel engine) which sounded like a tractor, and drove like one also, was the worst car i've owned - but is incomparable to the CR engines!

Oh, and im pretty sure they put a silly speaker in the later TFSI engined cars to make it sound better - which is just ridiculous.

So, bottom line, go for it.

*Note I am not biased! I respect the TFSI engines for what they are, but the simple fact is the extra mpg/miles to a tank you get using the CR170 just makes it a simple choice between the two.

One question though, forgive me for asking but this always puzzles me....why are you planning on remapping a car that you have never driven yet?... if you dont think it will be powerful enough then im sure there are other options on the market.

Did test-drive it, or rather, ridden in it and I was never thrown back into my seat like the TFSI does. Also , diesels remap beautifully it seems with some really progressive curves and high torque.
I wanted to remap the TFSI, but I'll never get to so...the CR will be my victim.
But I do see what you're saying

Spot on on many points there re. the TFSI FR. It does sound terrible on startup.

I do about 25 miles a day, and we so quite a few 100+ mile trips quite often. So I think it will pay off big time.

Also, the perfect one for us just came on the market.
Dsg, white, body kit, facelift. So had o go for it.

Thanks for all the reassuring notes!

I have the cr and if im right the did fence is that the cr is common rail where the pd isn't also common rail engines are easier for the ecu control. I'm not aware of any other changes but I am sure there is.

Get a CR, remap and buy a loud exhaust

of course not the same but you will not so disappointed...

I had a TDI Fr 170cv, happy of it

I went from Cupra to a Subaru Impreza 2.0D tuned to 200 bhp. CR's are way too expensive over here and only few are sold.
Have to say the cupra much more fun to drive and with Stage 2+ extremly fast too.
But Since I do over 40.000 miles each year and needing a fulll tank every other day petrol was no option anymore and so far I can live with the Subaru pretty well (and the non stop flow of speeding tickets allmost dried up).

We chopped in our S H A R K mapped TFSI FR for a CR170 DSG about 3 months ago and don't regret it at all.

The CR170's not a slow car but I sometimes miss the raw power off the mark of the TFSI but after just filling up again with 550 miles showing on the trip from last refill compared to the 350 max I'd get from the petrol, that more than makes up for it..!

Good luck with the swap mate.

Thanks. It's that 550 out of a tank that does it.
I'm just selling my p-flo now and making a shipping list of small mods for when we get it Friday :)
GTI pedals, black mirror caps, dust caps, carbon wrap etc etc. maybe a p-flo again?
