There is no point what so ever in taking he gear box out and not replacing it with a new clutch why have double the labor cost

Buy me one then ;)

My clutch seems ok at the mo. I'll see what I can do, whether I can squeeze one in before Willie sends it down..

You'd hate to spend another 6 hours labour doing the clutch 10k down the line especially if your tracking it!

Box off = do clutch

Ok ok.. So what do we think of these? El is running the Awesome gti kit and I know how much abuse he gives his car. It's held up fine and completed a track day at Brands too with no issues.

The awesome clutches are rated quite highly but I've had no experience.

I can only speak highly of the SouthBend clutch in mine. Welcome to have a drive in the spring if you haven't had yours done by then???

I've driven El's and it was very OEM in feel, was very impressed. Leaning towards that at the moment, the price is real good too.

Cheers mate. It won't be that long though. If I can get a clutch this month aswell I will and have it all done at once with the gears re aligned so it's slick on the changes. Bit notchy when cold with the short shifter at the moment.

Where did you get hold of youth SouthBend kit and what's the price like vs the Awesome one?

The gears are very easy to DIY align if you want me to talk you through?

I got mine from the USA (where they are made) was about a grand afaik

Can I do it without the car up on ramps? If not it's cool to leave till it goes to my friends garage as they're brilliant with all things transmission :)

Hmm, bit out of my budget for the time being mate with a few birthdays and xmas also coming up. Will keep it in mind though. Must do the job well if it's alright on your car!!!

Tom I'd rather leave the box and diff sitting in the garage untill you can afford a new clutch rather than fit it with your old clutch.

Gear linkage reset is a doddle. Involves removing the battery and tray though so that'll mean a trip to AMD for you Tom ;)

Watch this - http://vimeo.com/6881683

The battery needs to come out cos unless you have the hands of a small woman you'll never reach past it to get to the locking pin on the box.

Only teasing about needing to go to AMD for that bit btw, no offence meant ;)

Do you have a shortshifter? And did it eliminate/reduce notchy changes once done?

Nope, no shortshifter. I quite like the feel of the gearbox as it is. It was starting to feel a little stiffer and slightly notchy when cold and I had to remove the battery to fit the Forge MAP sensor tube so did the gear linkage reset while I was at it.

It does feel a bit better than it did but mainly the "locations" of each gear feel a little more natural - like the line you push or pull the stick in to change just feels better. Tough one to describe, took a little getting used to but it just feels nicer.
