Right I've been on this forum for a while now and thought it was about time I got a little place of my own to dump all the little bits and pieces I have done and experiances I enjoy with my FR TDI.

Ok so the story began a long time ago when I got a new job 40 miles away. I had a pony astra at the time and as with most new jobs you get a little bit more cash to spend. I went on the hunt for the fastest and most economical car I could afford. Looked at a 320Ci, nah, not qwk enough and not really into B' Ems (unless they're of the M variety).

So I got this
imag0168ev.jpg

It was just over a yr old and had 17k on the clock. Got it relatively cheap as well (looking at that pic now emphasises how much of a tractor it once was!)

Anyway while it was still under warranty I didn't do anything to it. I went through all the dramas of wiring looms & sensors going pete tong. Then an injector died in the middle of morning rush hr while on the M1, that was fun. I've since had them all replaced etc as per the millions of posts on this subject.

Then along came this

p1010563mr.jpg

It had a milltek exhaust, TD 1.2s (17s on the front, 18s on the rear) and toyo R1Rs. It was a crazy little car, enjoyed it for the summer and then the pain of looking after 2 cars without a garage got to me and I sold it (for what I paid for it:))

I then thought why can't I turn the A-to-B car into something I could use on the track as well??

First off, new wheels.

A new set of Oz Ultraleggers were ordered, in matt graphite

imag0172m.jpg

and then it paid a visit to chesterfield where it had a de-dpf, remap and eibach pro street s coilovers.

it then looked like this

p1020864b.jpg

p1020868e.jpg

p1020871e.jpg

I was happy with this for about 3 days, then the clutch started to slip. I'd done about 90k miles on the original clutch so I thought ok time for a new one.

Went for a Helix stage 2 clutch with SMF. This clutch lasted about 3mths as the return spring in the drive plate came loose and screwed it up. I have since got a replacement drive plate and alls been good so far (15k miles on it so far).

Next on the list was a new exhaust. I wanted something different from the standard milltek ones and plumped for an STR/Scorpion system.

imag0211u.jpg

imag0212sg.jpg

At the same time I got a whiteline rear ARB installed

imag0213j.jpg

This made a very nice improvement to the handling, got rid of the understeer and made it nice and "pointy" when turning in.

Next up was to give it a blast on track. Bedford autodrome was the chosen destination (close to where I am, I'd been around it before and its a pretty safe track)

A few pics from the day

and a small vid

I had a great time but as with these days you just find something else that needs fixing.

So I had a new set of front discs put on (previous ones had warped), goodridge braided brake hoses, dot4 brake fluid and a whiteline front ARB.

The front ARB has also made a big positive change. It now goes 'round the bends very flat, gives you loads of confidence. Would defo' recomend it to anyone wanting to improve their handling.

Now while I was at bedford I had a bit of tuition from an instructor (if you're new at track days make sure you also sign up for this, very useful) and we had a bit of a chat about what would give me the biggest gain on track, the porsche brakes were put on hold and I was on the hunt for a second set of wheels and some slick tyres!

I ended up getting some TD 1.2s in white?
kgrhqjjienpeiw11bprrdfn.jpg

and they came with mich' PS3s which I've kept for my next set of road tyres

and I got some pirelli RS compound slicks

p1030370d.jpg

today I stuck 1 one the car to see what it looked like

dsc01306t.jpg

dsc01307w.jpg

I also got hold of a contour roam HD camera and mount so I can capture on track shenanigans

dsc01309a.jpg

anyway thats about it for starters, can't promise this RR will get updated too often as there's not a huge amount more I want to do to the FR. More likley to get a few more pics and vids of track days (this coming sat' is the next one, bedford again :))

Track day no2 complete.

Another visit to Bedford Autodrome this time it was the SEN circuit (full circuit chopped in half) and it was a full day.

So got up too early for a Saturday and pottered off. Breifing over time to swap to the slicks. Bit aprehensive about what to expect from the tyres, pretty noisey was first impression. How long do slicks take to warm up?? I didn't know.

Had 3 laps and came in to have a look, check the wheel nuts and all was good, rubber was getting sticky! Went back out and started to learn the track, that done you start to fine tune the braking points, where to turn in etc. I was going pretty quick TBH, ok I wasn't keeping up with the cayman R or the GTR or the R8 but the R26R was overtaken a couple of times:D

So the main new part of the day was to 1. try the new tyres and 2. see if the front ARB stopped the front wheel rub. The wheel rub is still there but all those who I had a chat to said the car looked really good through the bends which I was pleased about (flat and qwk). Not sure how to sort this, adjustable top mounts and more camber??

So to the tyres....pretty darn good I'd say. They took a while to get use to, they pick up everything on the track, go off line I'd get a heap of rubber stuck to them and then down the straights it all flies off (sounds like your tyre is disintegrating, couple of times all over the car behind ). Grip through the bends is great as you'd expect but the impressive bit which I didn't think about is that you can brake so much later and turn in later without any dreaded understeer. Time and time again I'd brake very late and think I'd never hit the apex and I'd surprise myself. Wheel spin is still present but thats just me being impatient.

All in it was another great day, the weather stayed spot on, lots of like minded petrolheads driving all manner of cars (westfieds, caterhams, porkers, MR2s, golfs, M3s, clios and a volvo estate!).

Wheres the next trackday gonna be? Rockinghams not to far away??

I'll try and get a few pics and vids up at some point, need to go to bed as I feel fooked!

(now with track day pics)

some pics from yesterday, unfortunately not many of the leon as there wasn't a photographer there.

white wheels, slick tyres, and a hayabusa powered westfield going by

and a few snaps of the cars there on the day

R26R & Caymen R

a few westies and a BM'

a VX' and a caterham

p1030381s.jpg

another caterham driven bt Tristan Judge whos doing the caterham academy this year,

p1030377v.jpg

he was there being given a bit of tuition by tony freeman whos raced in several radical & european prototype championships (and won a few of them). He was there in this (although it wasn't on track, shame as it sounded sweet!)

p1030383o.jpg

a lovely R8 GT which was owned by a great old fella (60ish), he new how to pilot the thing as well!

p1030388hq.jpg

NSX and Esprit

and a snap of the tyres after the day

p1030396h.jpg

the front right took a bit of a hammering (on the right) but I'll swap that to the rear for the next day. The rest look pretty good although I think I need to go for a harder compound next time, mediums too soft for a 1300kg car

oh and the wheels ended up absolutley filthy

Great work!!!

Where did you get the slicks?? What trackday organiser do you use? Javelin that I use don't like suction cameras and only allow solidly fixed/mounted ones. Im after a Go pro.

I can recommend the top mounts to help with the contact, also more adjustability for grip/handling.
You'll find the ground control top mounts on mine in my build thread, supplied and fitted by Alex at AKS tuning, I can't recommend him enough. (On Bedford autodromes doorstep too for some track support :p )

It's already been said but it's good to see the car been enjoyed, I end up getting carried away paying for mods and run out of money for trackdays :'( lol

Maybe see you at Beford in the summer?

Cheers Mike,
Got the slicks off the pistonheads classifieds in the motor sport section. Think it was Steve Harkness but there's loads on there, just make sure you get a harder compound, even with that carbon bonnet the leons no lightweight!

I use msv for when I book at Bedford, it's well run with loads of different types of motors. They've neva mentioned anything about the camera. Probably gonna do one more before heading back to Oz (in two minds whether to take the Leon with me, would be a one of a kind out there) so might see ya there.

Defo agree about Alex, he worked on my car while it was at BDM and have chatted to him about various bits, most recently got a SALK from him. I'd get all my work done there if he was a.little closer but I use unit18 who are on my doorstep and they seem to know how to setup the Leon.

I've got a few pics of my latest fecked clutch which I'll post tomorra plus and what else I had done. Anyway I look forward ta seeing these DB9 brakes!

The DB9 brakes are being sold... Im going bigger

You tried the S-alk then? If it was on my recommendation I hope you love it, it's much better than the whiteline version in my opinion.

I'll take a look at MSV, cheers. I cab get a GoPro motorsports edition for 170 quid out here so will be able to get some trackday footage :)

What size slicks should I be looking for at equivelant size to 225 40 18 ?

hi Mike, I think I went for 225/640R18. take a look here, it may helphttp://www.avonmotorsport.com/motorsport/radial/18-radial-slick

not too sure about the SALK at the mo'. Not sure if it’s it or the RARB being set to the stiffest setting but the front of the car feels a little off on turn in (gets loads of grip mind u), think I need to test it in safer, dryer conditions.

nice car m8,did you strip any of the interior etc for the track?
for weight saving

Hi, nope left the interior in, did think about removing it but think it might mess up the alignment and I don't think I need to rear of the car any lighter, its already a bit skittish now!

and for those who wanted to have a looked at a fecked Helix pressure/cover plate and friction plate here ya go

uneven worn springs in cover plate

cracked friction plate in two places

20130210184910hdr.jpg

now i'm no expect in clutch technology but I would have thought a "motorsport" clutch in a 210bhp 320lb/ft 2ltr derv that does an easy 80miles a day shouldn't cause this. I'm not a traffic light GP racer nor do I do any 1/4 days, yes I did 2 track days with this clutch but NO standing starts.

I've still got the broken clutch so if anyone wants more pics let me know, I'd love a bit of help on what might have caused this to go wrong. Please note this is Helix clutch number 2 to go wrong, the last one the return spring came lose and jamed with the cover plate. This has not been a cheap upgrade and Helix have not offered any help whatsoever......rant over

Hey Jimbo,

I was reading through your thread and saw that you are having issues with front tyre rub. I have installed coilovers and am having the same issue as you (i think) with the front tyres rubbing on a screw that holds the front bumper in place when pushing the car round corners. Unfortunately you cant change the camber on our leons which i was very suprised with so I have been looking for solutions, one of them being ARB's which i will be getting hopefully sooner rather than later and am looking for adjustable top mounts but none are specifically made for the KW coilovers that I have. I just dont really know what to do other than that so I was wondering if you had found a solution to the problem and if you could help me out in any way... thanks.

Hi M.001, Mike in post #8 above has the same issue as both of us and has fitted adjustable top mounts (think he's got KW V3s) which he says has helped. Take a look at his RR on mk5golfgti, I think he even removed his arch liners once to see if that would help (not sure if it did?). Other then that stiffer ARBs or increasing ride height is the only other options I know about. Its not great as I've worn a hole in my arch liner and I've killed my front offside tyre

Little update, third gear has gone and I have to be stationery to be able to get it into first gear otherwise I get a nice crunch. The garage did say the gearbox had been damaged due to the clutch going wrong. Was ok for a few weeks but it gave up on Wednesday just gone. It's sure makes interesting driving without 3rd!

I'm now hunting for a new gearbox, if anyone knows of a decent one for sale please let me know!

Very nice ride mate, one of my favorite colors on the Leon
I really need your input on the Eibach coil overs as i might be getting them for my Cupra.

How is the ride and performance?
and how much do you reckon they would still go down as in your first photo after the install?
