Was fiddling about with interior bits and bobs the other night and was wandering whether anyone has ever somehow linked the accelerator pedal with the gauge lighting brightness.

I.E. the cupra's red gauges are at the dimmest setting when the accelerator is fully out, and at their brightest when it is fully in, and obviously changing between as the driver uses the pedal.

Just a (perhaps stupid) thought. The kind that often drifts into my head when daydreaming

Would this even be possible? It must be somehow as the control unit is already in place to change the brightness... so any genius ideas on how one might go about doing this? :D No promises I'm going to try.... but I might.

SealLCR, im getting a new CP harness fitted soon so Ill ask if the guy knows how it operates, hes ex VAG and pretty clued up so might know.

The control switch is just a variable resistor. You'd have to find someway of mounting another variable resistor to the throttle pedal, similar to the 2 already mounted to it for the drive-by-wire system. Then just wire that inline to the dimmer switch in the dash( which you would need to have set to full brightness) and that would do it. God knows how you'd mount it to the pedal though!?!?
Have a look how the other 2 are attached and go from there i guess if you really want to do it. :)

That is one really really good idea u have got me thinking now lol it will be one very very big job but its defo doable.

The only thing with this idea what would need to be looked into first is will it cause any faults with the pedal ie false signals sent or voltage drop or even short to ground faults etc in which might cause the pedal to not work propley. The reason I have said this is becasue some items use resistance change to measure what they are doing at set positions.

So in simple turms If u cut into the fly by wiring which u would need to do. This will cause a change in voltage and resistance or give a faulse earth so there for will be changeing what the on board computer knows.

Ok hears the steps i would take to attepnt this
Find the power and earth to the dimer switch which goes to the clock or needles.
Then find the earth at the accelorator pedal plus the live. Then ur nealry there apart from finding out about the info I said above.

A veriable resister will be needed to make the dim settin adjust on the clocks or needles plus a normal resister to try stop any voltage drop after that just a case of wiring in quite a complex job to behonest a wiring diagram will be needed a good multi meter and some some tools to strip down dash etc.
I hope this helps a little sorry for long write up

Maybe one of the air sensors as it measures more stereo adjusts?!?

It'll probably just use the speed signal from the ABS sensors in the same way as the climate control does - you can have the speed in km/h on the climate display ;)

Just need to have a look at the radio wiring for a speed input. It's not new tech either, my Dad's J-plate Cavalier CD had speed sensitive volume on that too :)

OP this is utterly the worst idea i have ever heard. Like all the honda fanboi's who make the guages change colour when vtec kicks in. You made the ethical and educated decision to buy a Seat, and not a Honda, so don't lower yourself to their level.

This coming from a man who was going to vtec his 1.8t? [B)]

Hahaha sorry :cartman: this was my insurance policy: "Just a (perhaps stupid) thought."
So in reply to you, yes this was definitely a stupid idea I agree!

In reply to others, I might look into it lol.

Does sound complicated and I would feel VERY uneasy fiddling with the throttle cables for the reasons you mention mk4.

Having said that I am a tart and would actually love the gauges (on my completely stock, unchavvy mk1 I might add) to do this, you could always disconnect it if it got annoying!
