Hey guys I'm thinking about changing the air filter to a K&N one to get a bit more noise out of my 1.4.

Any advice on filter size (or however it's measures) that I should use? I know I could just check on eBay but I thought that if I could search for a specific model number I might get better prices.

Thank you :)

This is the model number on K&N website : 33-2920
Its a panel filter that replaces your OEM filter, click on the number to redirect you to its page on K&N's website.

I have one on my 1.4 and to be honest with you the noise is very minimal, if you want noise you have to go with an induction kit.

Yes I think I was referring to an induction kit, could you help with that please?

Would performance improve with either of these?

Quick search (which I should have done before posting hehe) pointed to the E-2997 filter.

It's priced at £40 and listed as a performance boost. What do you guys think, does the sound and performance boost justify £40?

Follow up - that's for the TSI model. Mine is not. What do you think about using this? It's cheaper than the 57i...

The 1.4 n/a engine doesn't have a ready made induction kit from K&N. I don't know if other brands do have, i didn't do any research about it. Therefore, you have to build one yourself using an appropriate flexible hose.

Concerning performance, it will be very minimal even if you installed an induction kit or with the 57i, because the extra cold air the engine is breathing is not being met with more fuel injection, thus your performance will be increased very slightly and you wont even notice it unless you do a remap, which personally i wont waste the money on doing for a n/a engine since you will only gain 10hp.

Concerning sound, with a custom built induction kit or with the 57i, you will definitely notice a difference in sound.

This being said, if you still want to go with installing an induction kit, i personally suggest to build one yourself, with a cone filter placed behind the grille since i believe it will breathe more cold air than the 57i which will be placed directly on your throttle body with a feeding hose.

Ok, first of all thanks for taking your time to reply.

So if I understood correctly, you would suggest a cone filter and some flexible pipe as a feeding hose. The filter will be placed directly behind the grille, replacing the factory air intake pipe, and the feeding hose will connect to the intake on engine (to replace the air box).

What cone filter would you suggest?

And am I correct to say that the air box will completely replaced by this?

Thank you

Yet another update - need some advice on this since I'm unsure of my conclusions...

So the 57i kit for the mk5 1.4 L is this: http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?prod=57-0420

Now towards the bottom, under accessories there is listed a replacment filter: RC-4620 - Replacement Filter - Link: http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?prod=57-0420

Now here comes my question. The replacement filter costs 40 gbp on amazon, whilst the 57i kit costs 73 GBP. Am i wrong to think that the 57i Kit is has the RC-4620 filter plus some flexible tubing and cable ties?

Would buying the RC-4620 filter only and fitting as shown in figure #7 (Here: http://www.knfilters.com/instructions/A2054-451-3_inst.pdf) be good as well? Obviously I know moving the cone filter behind the grille by means of the tubing would be better since it will intake cold air, but I can't justify spending 30 GBP for a flexible pipe and some cables ties....

I would get a twin cone design and use piping to either take the filter away from the heat or place it as close as you can to an air feed.

tuning a 1.4 n/a is a little pointless to tell the truth but should give you a nice bit of noise if thats what your after.

I ended up buying the 4620, I'll post photos when it's fitted :)

Congrats on that.

Yes the air box will be replaced by this filter, but keep in mind that installing this filter without a feeding hoze will compromise its effectivness, and MAY make your car underperform because the air its taking in is hot, thats why i suggested to get a flexible hose with ties, and placing it behind the grille. Other way is to get a feeding just not to compromise your car's performance and be on the safe side.

This is the one which was on the Mk4 1.4 we bought. It obviously wasn't enough for the guy who fitted it before us as he had drilled a couple of holes in the underside! The breather hose from the rocker cover had no where to go so he'd plugged it up and it'd split, leaking oil all over the engine bay.

I replaced it with an air box and I'll put a panel filter in at the next service.

EDIT - from looking at the instructions you had, maybe it was just that he'd tried to fit the valve at the end of the breather into the filter and failed.

That looks like a mess  the K&N has a tie at its flange which fits right in. No need to drill any holes.

On the instructions from the K&N site for the installation of the 57i kit they seem to fit the filter directly onto the intake and then using the old feeding hose to passively throw colder air towards the cone filter. Have a look at them, I posted them a few posts up

Thanks

If that's the case then fine, the point is to feed the filter with cold air.

Yes that was my concern though I couldn't justify £35 for the flexi tube. Any idea where I could get it from online? (I don't live in the UK)

Yeah, to maybe fit the filter tight behind the grille. Would any flexi tube do or should it be one specific to air intakes?
