I'm looking to sell my mk4 pd130 sport now I've a company car but still want something with a bit of go when I fancy a blast and to start doing track days with

Looking to get about 2-2.5 for the mk4 and mods stripped. So would ideally have that as my initial/ basic budget

I've seen these mk3 cupras making something like 260BHP which in a 1.1t car should be plenty

So I've a few general questions
What is everyone's thoughts?
Can the chassis actually handle that power?
Does the cupra provide plenty of fun in the bends aswell as the straights? Especially against some of the more cliche choices ie Clio sport.
What is the modding route for these and associated costs? Labour I'll mainly be carrying out myself

You can make an Ibiza handle yes.
They are good cars and engine is pretty bulletproof.

My Ibiza was built purely for driving and coping with any thing.

If you want it to handle your need a parts from Vibra Technic stuff. Engine mounts and wishbone bushes (I'd stay away from powerflex if you can afford too)
Neuspeed front and rear uprated anti roll bars and good set of coilovers is a good start.

260bhp in a Ibiza, it's not going to be on stock turbo and properly be near the magic 300 torque figure so uprated rods needed or having it mapped down on power.

If you can afford a Diff, better clutch and bigger Brakes this will help the chassis and the handling loads.

I think your find it hard to match a clio sport, I went as far as removing the pas and still had more I wanted to uprated and change to make that bit better, but you will be fast than a clio sport and be having way more fun with boost kicking in.

You can build one to run over 700hp if you've got the funds! However on a budget it's very easy to build one about 250/260 hp,

A basic list would read like:
Vr6 clutch, g60 fly,
Ported std exhaust mani,
k03 hybrid,
Forged Rods if you wanna map it to full potential!
3 inch decat down pipe,
2.5 inch system,
some injectors,
good turbo intake pipe,
filter,
008 DV,
big fmic and good flowing pipe work,
Custom map,
Good shocks n springs,
Uprated anti roll bars,
Uprated bushes,
Decent disks and pads,
Good tyres!

From that you'll have a rather nice car!
People have ran these from 150 to silly hp, so 300 ish will be fine, if on a not too aggressive map things will last longer, and there's lots of options depending on the route you decide.

Cheers guys. I thought with the age of the chassis it might not live up to some of the other options.

What sort of budget do people think I'll need? I thought I'd be happy with a rough looking car but mechanically sound for 1.8k or maybe even less?
strip it out and see which bits require attention first. Probably just jump straight in with the clutch and diff then that's the big work out the way.

That budget will get you an ok car if you find one... But I would put aside 4 k in the long run to make a good one, if you do all work yourself, apart from mapping... Make it a good un!

Cheers, my aim is to develop it over time but the sale of the mk4 should get me a good start. 4k for the car and mods is ludicrously cheap for what you get. Especially after coming from the tdi scene.
If I can get hold of one for the right price is the challenge now.

IV just done my first track day in my mk3 cupra. I had a mk3 golf vr6 track car before.
The car has bilsteins shocks eibach springs 20mm rear spacers. K03s with remap 3inch down pipe de cat 2.5inch exhaust 3inch tail pipe forge tip 007 recirc. FMIC. Brembo front brakes. And I have to say it was an absolute blast. Loved. So much quicker in a straight than the golf. I was running full slicks to.
I am on the look to improve handling though. And maybe change to coilovers or stiffer springs.

4k on top of the cost of the car would be easier... And would allow a good, reliable 300hp if you can do a lot of labour yourself.

Yeh, vr6 clutch , g60 fly, good for 300ftlbs but about 100-150 quid...

20vt I love em! They're good for bang per buck! And solid well rehearsed engines... Not many unheard of problems... Yet new ground in power being attained recently! Aka beach buggy turbos, with the main two tuners in the subject area who are almost gods of 20vt tuning!

I started off with a stg1 a few years ago... Now k03s turbo and big fmic, awaiting a couple things and a new map! It's my daily!
And I also now have a spare largeport engine, and another shell to do with what I like... Plans yet to be unveiled! Bewarned.... It's real easy to spend money! Hahahaahah
