Hi guys

I've got a new charcoal canister waiting to go on which i got from Dave @ Sere last week.

I've done a search and can't see a guide or any instructions on how to DIY.

Anyone :help: ?

Thanks

AJ

Theres 3 10mm bolts holding it on and a hose connected to it

Oh really? Lol

I've been told by a few people it's a bit of a job to change it? I guess they just want my money so they can do it instead and charge me!

Glad i asked on here first, guess i'll be changing all the bits i need to do myself then :)

Only had the car for a couple months so still learning a few new things.

Hi mate, how did you get on with this? think I need to change my canister too as I keep getting the 'evaporative emissions system low purge flow' fault on my dash and I believe this is the cause.

What's the fault code that came up?

It was easy peasy, took me about 5-10 mins!

The charcoal canister is held on to a bracket. If you look on the back of the canister there is a small plastic tab i had to lift slightly to unhook the canister. Make sure you lift it enough so it stays there to unhook itself. I then grabbed the canister from the bottom and pulled up very hard until the canister slid away from the hooks. I managed to snap that rear plastic tab in the process but the new canister slid straight back in again and hasn't moved so that's fine!

Remove hoses connected to it and re-attach your new hose. The hose which goes towards the back into a white plastic tube looking thing is easy to get off too. On the end of that pipe there is a plastic white clip, just push the clip in and lift!

Thank god i checked on here before sending it to a garage and paying for a 5-10 min job!

Hi mate, the code that came up was : PO441: Evaporative Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow

I've switched it off a few times and it always ends up coming back, no problem with the car though with regards to performance, runs still the same.

My light would come and go every few days. It's been a week now and there's no light! Mine definitely affected performance, car was slower and used to hesitate sometimes when i would floor it. It stopped spinning up in 2nd gear too  But since i've changed it the car is once again back to normal and back to 2nd gear spinning!

Ahhh fair enough, glad I seen this post then and cheers for the directions on how to replace it, I'll definitely be doing that.

How much did the charcoal canister cost ya? Do you have a pic by any chance on where it is in the engine bay?

It may not necessarily be the canister, couple of valves could be affecting it too, as could a leak

I think it's 80 or 90 something? I got it from Dave @ Sere on this forum. It's right behind the drivers headlight you can't miss it. Black plastic canister with a couple of hoses coming out of it.

I had the same code as he did and from the looks of this forum it's a huge common issue. Dave @ Sere also said the same thing. Car is back to normal again after replacing it thank god!

This is a from a Golf on Google Images but it looks exactly the same........

Cheers for the info Dan & Troopa, think i'll replace the canister first with the hope that it solves the problem. If it doesnt, then atleast I know to look at the valves etc next

Troopa.. your instructions were bang on mate. Can't believe how easy it was to change.. didn't have to unscrew any 10mm bolts.. simply pulled off the first hose (the long thick one in the pic) and then pulled out the circular hose (which I replaced completely) with ease; at the other end of this hose, as suggested is a white bit it clips into, I just pushed the clips on the hose and it came out.

Then to get the canister out, I didn't undo any 10mm bolts.. there's two clips behind the canister, I just pulled them apart a bit and the lifted the canister up.. came out first time. After that, it was just the case of putting everything together exactly how I pulled it out.

Saved some unnecessary garage fees! Here's hoping my error code doesn't come up again!

Can't believe I was quoted £115 in labour alone to replace this part! Luckily the light's stayed off for a couple of weeks for me but I'll def be giving this a go myself if it rears it's head again!

No problem matey, glad you got it sorted! My light hasn't come back on since i changed mine and no fault codes either.
